Description
Here's another image for my dad, this time for father's day. It's a tetrapod/shark hybrid type creature, with Helicoprion and several modern species thrown into the mix. It'd be fantastic if some of my more zoologically-minded friends here could think up a better name for this organism than "sharkopod."

Damn, I'd pee myself seeing that coming out of the sand dunes.
Very nice, the anatomy is very realistic, I see that being able to stumble around land like how a crocodile walks.

PFFFFFFT.
There are land sharks in my favorite Zelda game.
None as monstrous as this!! This is sooooooo cool!

You could try my method for naming Spore creatures: Typing random letters and then rearange them to a good sounding name.
Let me demonstrate it: saghorag
Hey, that sounds allready like a name! Oh well, somehow. ^^

Hah, even that sounds like a good name for this guy! Saghorag...I like it!
Thanks!

I'd be scared as F@#K if that thing was real. I've had dreams about a crawlin shark..I like how you did it a little mushy looking cuz he's not in the water, very realistic! Very scary.

Thanks! I'm glad you think it's so scary. If a picture inspires an emotional reaction like that, something must be working right!

Very very interesting. It seems a little bloated, but that would most likely be from not being in water. Kudos tho

Thanks, sharkdude. I was going for thick and muscular, and a little bit flattened out from being on land, which is obviously a much less buoyant environment than water.

Yea, it is only natural to have that happen. Its girth or musculature seems similar to a great white or tiger. I would love to see more things like this.

Funny, that's not the first time one of my creatures has been compared to something from Primeval. I've never watched the show, though.

Actually there is a shark that crawls * with its fins on the sea bottom to capture its prey. Truth is stranger than fiction after all
While overall I like it execution and concept, I can't but note that the gill slits seem to be in the wrong place: they should be not on the shoulder but on a neck of sorts. At least that's how my comparative anatomy knowledge would have it

Thanks for the video, dracontes. It's neat to see that my crawling shark has at least some sort of basis in reality.
Good call on the gills, too. He doesn't really have much of a neck, though...

Eh, it freaked me out a bit the first time I saw it on a documentary
I guess that if this fictional animal had a similar evolutionary path as tetrapods the gill slits would either be almost always closed or would fail to develop altogether at this stage. The spiracle (openings behind the eyes) has been used to good effect in rays, so with a pumping gullet and the increased gill surface area it shouldn't be that difficult to breathe air, but that's just me.
I'd say that with the Helicoprion-like teeth this is a specialized off-shot. I'd like to see a more generalized version, if you don't mind my asking?

M0AI In reply to dracontes [2008-10-20 17:27:16 +0000 UTC]
I just might draw a generalized version, now that you ask. I might take it a bit more seriously than this version too. The Helicoprion teeth were just added to make it look cool.

I have a question: Is it related to bull sharks?

M0AI In reply to Aggrus [2008-10-20 07:28:31 +0000 UTC]
Sorry for the late reply, Aggrus. Sure, you can try to make up some taxonomic info for it, if you want. Just know that I didn't really draw this guy with science in mind, though. He's not based on any specific species or clade. He's mostly a chimaera of various shark features. So, as to whether he's related to bull sharks, I have know idea.

Well I was thinking like is most of his body based off a bull shark if so

Aggrus In reply to M0AI [2008-10-28 04:40:12 +0000 UTC]
Pseudo means 'fake' or 'false' in Latin and the rest is the actual taxonomy for a Bull shark. I think leucas means 'white'. I think carcharhinus might mean 'jagged nose'

How about Squaloreptilis ("crawling shark", to the best of my knowledge)?

Yeah, he's pretty badass. But don't worry, we'll all be comfortably extinct by time he comes around.
Squaloreptilis is another fine name. Thanks!

WOW, this is just awesome! I don't think I've ever seen a more creative take on an alternate vertebrate migration from sea to land, or towards a tetrapod-style body design. I love the pinniped-style limbs lifting the body clear of the ground! I can totally see this creature as amphibious, or as an intermmediate stage towards a true land-dweller. Fantastic work!

M0AI In reply to thomastapir [2008-06-19 06:39:17 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! Yeah, he's still very much an amphibious creature. His rear limbs are still little more than paddles, and his fins and gills show that he's still quite at home in the water. However, judging from the trunk and forelimb muscles that I gave him, I would think that he'd be capable of pulling himself along pretty powerfully on land.
I also have the seed of an idea of some secondarily terrestrial cetaceans. They only have one pair of limbs, so land creatures that descended from them would be very interesting, I think. The land would be colonized by bipods instead of tetrapods.

thomastapir In reply to M0AI [2008-06-19 22:23:22 +0000 UTC]
Oh wow, a "bipodal whale"--that sounds so cool! I have a particular affinity for aquatic/marine and amphibious creatures, and especially for creatures that look like they've undergone a particularly circuitous evolution from one environment to another (i.e. land to sea and back to land), so that sounds right up my alley. I can't wait to see it!

how about "Puddles" (since "Tidepools" is a silly name)
could I order a small colony of those sharks? I know a few rivers in the Devonian that would suit them perfectly.
ps: the creature looks perfectly plausible.

might have a problem - I just found out I need special permits to import anything amphibious to the Devonian. (drat!)
