I prefer this to your Sci Fi City CGMA piece.
The lack of clarity adds to the shrouded atmosphere so it's more emotive.

Cheers, there is almost always something more raw about earlier sketches.

Love it! I was reading the comments *stalk stalk* and I can't wait to see what type of futuristic art you will be making. The game sounds interesting too

Cheers. What game? Oh the game from the comments? Yeah I get asked to work on games that haven't even begun quite a lot. Most of them are indies with no budget or pie in the sky. I don't do a lot of work for free anymore...gotta eat. No disrespect to thatothercartoonist of course, dreams must be followed! I'm working on a cyberpunk game called Project Lodus at the moment..more sci-fi futuristic enviros coming up, I just can't show them yet.

Yeah I understand about you not doing anything free that much anymore but at least your talent has been spotted and you're getting good jobs

Wow, excellent work!
And of course I'd ask your permission first, I am a gentleman after all.
...Speaking of which, I have a game project in the works, a sort of graphic adventure/RPG thing set in the future. Could I possibly commission you for art, once I've gotten the game engine up to scratch? If you're up for it we can even collaborate more fully on the project. It's up to you, we can discuss it more at some point if you wish.
Have a nice day

Okay, cool. Though it might be a while before I have enough of a game and enough funds for commissions. I'm gonna be looking for a wide range of futuristic locations to use as backgrounds - and as varied as possible. It's a very open-ended game, with a lot of options open to players for where you can go. So besides a few specifics I might want, you can really let your imagination run wild on this one.
...So for example, a piece like this, how much would you expect to get commissioned for it?

Cheers mate. Well I did start this one a bit differently than normal, by using another painting I was working on. There was only one small photo element in that original painting. I just chopped up bits here and there and worked on it pretty organically until i saw something I liked develop (the main vertical building). I then blocked out a composition that made it work. I then adjusted perspective and worked on getting the values right for the comp I had put down loosely, adjusting here and there to get the depth working etc. There was already colour information in the original painting so I just tweaked things as I went with colour balance to get a palette I liked. Once I was pretty happy with the comp and values I started adding more photo elements to get some of that detail in the building going on, the key focus was on interesting shapes and matching values to my painting. After that just specific value tweaking to bring focus and contrast to silhouettes and a couple of finishing lighting passes and the little ships for some movement. I added a very light texture over the whole thing to unify it a bit.
I am working this sketch up to a final illustration for this week's CGMA so keep an eye out for that being posted this week

Sounds good so if I understand correctly. Work up the composition, values, colors etc... Then comp in phototextures on the actual buildings to help sell the idea of detail ?

M0nkeyBread In reply to zeedurrani [2013-06-02 11:53:39 +0000 UTC]
yeah exactly. If your values, comp and palette are solid then all you have to do is match the textures to your sketch (especially getting the values to match) and you have instant detail. You can then paint over to get them to integrate a bit better. I use either a lighten or soft light layer on pretty low opacity most times. The trick I have found is to find the right texture for the job (it may only be a small cutout of a larger image) and not let it dictate the image...it's the other way around.

Haha this will blow your mind. I have two degrees one in Physics and one in Computer Science. I did a diploma in Film and 3d animation. I am totally self taught as an illustrator. It has been a year and a half of blood sweat tears and no sleep and I'm only barely scratching the surface of it.

Thanks, everything that you have replied has been very inspiring for its hard for me to practice art. For I start then give up, then start and give up again. You have helped alot, So how many hours a week have you put practicing art?
π: 0 β©: 1
M0nkeyBread In reply to gljakagmo [2013-06-25 00:31:47 +0000 UTC]
No worries. The key really is motivation. If you really want it bad enough you will succeed, it's just a matter of time. It's never a steady amount of hours but I would say I've probably been doing art stuff anywhere from 30 - 40 hours a week. I also work at a day job (non art related) 4 days a week so most of the time is after work on weekdays till I sleep and pretty much most of the day on the three days I have "off". So I'm probably pulling 60-70 hour working weeks every week. I wish all of that could be art related because you need time off, but alas until I go fulltime freelance or get a studio job it's going to be like that.

Hey man, you know I'm glad I could help. Not many people will help you in this field, you gotta do it yourself for the most part, so any little bit that I can do to help someone else I try and do it.
