Description
"Ascending" Object Reference Still Life20"x24":Acrylics, only Mar's Black, Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Medium, and Doxazine Purple on a gallery wrapped canvas.
We had to do a still life, in which we could do a few different ways. The way I chose was where you put a bunch of stuff together that was never together in the first place. I had the idea of the crow, and he told me to go for it. I actually didn't know what to do but then the crow skull attached to the manequin kind of hit me and I got excited about it. The crow background is kind of like a spirit of a crow rising from darkness. I liked doing the background because I have never done anything expressive like that before, and i'll tell you, that is very limited expression. The crow skull people are suppose to be kind of like Shamans in a way. Mr. Butcher said that it might be a good idea to change the manequin hand into a real skeleton hand, so I did. I like how this one turned out. And if you notice on the far left between the edge and the crow skull person, there's a transparent black shadow of the smaller person. It was a crazy shadow that I wish I could have done more with.

I love this, it's so sinister.
BTW, are you sure that the crow isn't in fact a jackdaw? Not that it really matters.

American crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos
Jackdaw, Corvus monedula
I just saw the markings and thought jackdaw. However upon investigation of what the American crow looks like, it's probably the lighting making it look as though it has jackdaw markings.
I love it anyway, you've very talented.

This is a great piece! For some reason that old Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds" comes to mind.

Nice job on the skulls. When I painted a bird skull everyone in class called me morbid. :/
