Description
So the next page, and the beginning of one of our favorite scenes in the entire story.Β I'm sorry for the slight delay on this one. I have a couple of commissions, so the next page will be delayed too... But only until next Monday. It was going to go up this Wednesday, but I had some tablet issues this week that made me fall behind a bit, so sorry about that. (it's fixed now though.) But yeah... Monday. One thing was that I did a halfway switch to a blend of digital and manual inking for the page here. I'm not noticing much of a difference.

Could be worse. Could be Becka from Shadowgirls' luck. At least what's in the dumpster is probably friendly.

That's good, because the entire comic is inspired by his music.

You did really great with the directing, coloring and lighting to make the feel you want to, to come out on this page Mach Β It feels like night time, it feels isolatedΒ

I was realizing while coloring this page that at some point in time, I don't think I can say I "color my lineart" anymore as much as I'm digitally painting a page.Β

Well sorta... In my mind's eye, coloring a page means that if I needed someone else to color it, I could let them. But for digitally illustrating it... Means that it's... Actually, lemme show you.
This page is probably not the best example, but the first part there is basically what I drew by hand on my art table. Then when I brought it into the computer, I darkened the ink lines and cleaned them up a bit, and added the background into it. I have CGI models I use for them, so I just popped them into place, and then added shading to it all. Then everyone's favorites... flats. And then the final coloring. Things like the trees in the backgrounds, the shading the lighting... It's all in coloring. Maybe I'm over thinking it all?

I think it's cool, I don't think you are over thinking it, I always do the special effects at the very end too. When you say CGI models what do you mean?Β

For the last ten years or so, when it comes to things like cars and buildings and stuff like that, I use a program called Sketchup for that. (It's free. They have a browser based version now.) It can create a lineart-like outline of the models. Then I take it into Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint and kinda "ink over it" adding little touches to it to make it look more hand done. So like prior to work on a project, I'll make up all the sets and scenery that I'll be using for it, so it makes it a lot easier to do. Then just rotate and adjust the sets or vehicles around and then treat it like a backdrop.Β
For example, Page Two:
The living room was a set I made up for the series, to help make it look more lived in. And the jeep... Well, if you remember Shadowgirls' character Lindsey, she had a Jeep too. In fact... That exact same jeep. Once you got the models made, you can re-use them whenever you need them.
HOWEVER... It's not a perfect replacement for drawing them. You still need to tweak and draw over them, otherwise they look pasted in. And that only seems to work for static designed images, like cars and houses. If you need to have a forest or blankets or something more organic and less rigid... By hand it is.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Wow... I had no idea something quite like this existed, and here I am doing all my bgs by hand lol I see I see, wow... geez, that must help a lot for certain things, I'm all like Toriyama where all my buildings and machines look so weird because i made them to be my own "shorthand" XDΒ

Actually, I find how you do it rather admirable. I feel like I'm cheating sometimes.

hahahahahahaha. Well yeah but like, you don't want your art to look like a weird cartoon like Pirate Madeline, it's like the weirdest comic ever made. XDΒ
I think your art, Mach, is much more like a western comic, in that, things look more semi-realistic, so it works for you to do things as you do them.Β
