I feel weird saying this, but the leg that has stepped forward is fricking awesome!
Also, I have always wanted to watch Gundam but everyone always gives me mixed reviews on the different series' so I have stayed away thus far. Care to give your opinion?

Hope you don't mind someone else chiming in, Gharad.

As far as Gundam goes, the only series' that I haven't watched are Turn A (mostly because I was turned off by the mecha designs, sorry Mach!) and Seed Destiny.

One thing that is prevalent through most of the different series is the focus on military and political maneuvers. These really aren't kid shows (despite what non-informed people will say about anime); people die, are blackmailed, etc.

That said, if you're into that sort of thing, all of the series (except for G-Gundam, which is the most 'lite' version out there, and seemingly more geared for the younger crowd) are great. Even the original MSG has good artwork (great for its day), and all of them feature fantastic battle sequences.

A few personal recommendations:

Mobile Suit Gundam: The original. If you want to watch any of the related series, it's good to watch this one first so you've an idea who the major players are, and what's going on.
Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory: My personal favorite from the original universe follow-up series, it details the theft of a nuclear-armed Gundam by Zion forces and the battles that take place as a result.
Gundam Wing: Set in a separate universal with a few close ties to the original, GW follows the story of five young men from the space colonies in their attempt to fight off the forces from Earth. The movie, Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz is great.

Hope that helps!

Thanks heaps! So pretty much watch any of it, even if it is just to get the building blocks together for future reference?

Well, you should watch Mobile Suit Gundam first if you want to watch anything else in the original universe (which includes Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Zeta Gundam, Char's Counterattack, and Gundam F91). Any of the other series are spinoffs set in their own universe and can be watched whenever you'd like.
