Description

Kronos 1, Deep Space Exploration Vehicle.

This is probably my most ambitious space project so far. I've been working on this spacecraft for quite a while now, several months of all the design work that includes the spacecraft design, interiors, mission structure and goals, functional design of different sections of the vehicle and some other technical details. For now I wanted to present to you a 3d model that took almost a month to make and there are still lots of stuff to do. Anyway, I wanted to tease you a bit and share some of my excitement for this project, full presentation of the Kronos 1 mission coming later this year.

PS - Any resemblance to Hermes spacecraft from The Martian is pretty much coincidental and mostly comes from the research and lots of thinking about realistic long duration crewed space missions. It just means that both me and The Martian crew, did their research on space vehicles

(I see that I have fave bombed many of your works, I shall leave a comment on this one.)
I really do enjoy how you paint these space ships, as they're perhaps the most realistic renderings I have seen on this site and enjoy looking at them from time to time. I am impressed by how well you capture the lighting, the textures, etc. and even the designs look highly believable. I can totally see space craft like these being built in time, and your artworks resemble high quality photographs from that future time. Overall, amazing art you are definitely an inspiration to me. ^^

You usually use two centrifuges spinning in opposite directions to keep the vessel from spinning in the opposite direction to the centrifuge.Β

yeah, that's totally right, you can also use a flywheel with low mass and high rotation speed.Β

Yes, there will be some "incredible cross sections" style drawings with all the details and info

It does resemble the Hermes, and yes it is because this is the kind of real world design NASA would use to get to Mars. Its an awesome design.

Looks fantastic when can I book my place on its maiden voyage. Seriously hope its not to long where these ships are a reality though and we can really start exploring.

Very nice work. I really love realistic spacecraft. I am especcialy loving all the multilayer insulation fabric details, from the sheer amount of unique details i assume you used cloth simulation, maybe combined with some sculpting?Β

Edit: ah after some more looking i saw some tiling repeats. So maybe just sculpting then? But you did a very good job hiding the tiling.

MacRebisz In reply to LandeTLS [2015-10-19 10:28:58 +0000 UTC]

No sculpting in this one Cloth simulation of different segments and some of them are instanced here and there, separate and unique simulated meshes are pretty heavy. I consider going back and redoing some segments, that have most obvious tiled look.Β

Btw. What sw did you use for the sim? Iwe tried doing sectioned padding simulations in 3dsmax cloth but it doesnt support crossing seams so i had to try some wierd ways to get the shapes. It really didnt look right. My best method (seperately seamed pieces for each of the "pads" and a heavily turbosmoothed thin box skinwrapped ontop then adding preserves to the creases and then running a slightly inflated sim on it) did get kindof workable results but not so flexible and long sim times. I assume you are exporting as obj to marvelous designer etc. And running the sim there?

MacRebisz In reply to LandeTLS [2015-11-23 16:22:27 +0000 UTC]

For thermal blankets I've used Marvelous Designer, it's a lot faster and more powerful for this type of cloth simulation than 3ds max. After that, exported mesh to .obj and assembled everything in place in Modo.

Thanks for explaining your workflow. I actually recently purchased marvelous designer mainly for the sole purpose of simulating these types of shapes.Β
I have to say it again.. Very inspiring work.

Kroeghe [2015-10-17 16:08:12 +0000 UTC]

The ship might not look photo-realistic in this picture, but it looks real enough for my brain to acknowledge it as a real-world object. Great fuel for my imagination, as I've seen enough pictures of real ships and stations to realise they're very far from slick sci-fi vessels from movies and are more akin to hermetic toolsheds falling with incredible speed through radioactive void. Looking at it all I can think about is that its made of millions of moving parts, circuts, valves etc. - all prone to failure.
What I'm trying to say is that my hair stand up on end when I think I might be one of the Kronos' crew. Existential dread - probably not what you've aimed for with the project, but hey, bonus objective achieved
