Sweet mother of bellybuttons! You could actually make stickers out of these. Although Applejack looks quite dead.

Well, it's not too much that I know, but maybe there are some techniques that you may find useful. For example, you draw the strokes first and then convert them with "Stroke to path" to tweak them into nice tapers. If you are using the latest version of Inkscape, you can use the Powerstroke path effect to get this done much quicker. It's also much easier to edit stuff afterwards with this method. (The linked tutorial explains it for Ponyscape, but the latest Inkscape build has it, too.) If the tapered stroke is not too complex, you can also use the "Taper Stroke" path effect. It's easier to handle.
