Description Once upon a time,
There died a tree
Whose birds all flew away.

They left after having
Said goodbye to
Improbable patchwork dreams.

The broccoli reminds me of the baobab trees from The Little Prince. Very lovely ... the dotted lines help add to the map quality of the background.

Agh, you make broccoli so romantic! I love it. The ink blots work well with the birds. Great piece as usual.

I can't offer any advanced critique, because I don't think I'm very good at it. But I will say that I like this very much. It's so fantastical. I like the text and how you play with broccoli as trees. We all fantasize that they are trees when we are little! Very beautiful.

I think I spent a good two years or so imagining Cauliflowers to be trees. What I'd give to see a completely white, fleshy tree!

When I read it the first time, I thought of sparrows and doves.

When I read it the second time, I thought of ravens.

I removed the fifth line and played with that.

I love it, beautiful weird and sad.

this is totally awesome... actually most of your gallery.. is thumbs up!

and in this case.. this deviation.. may seem a lil bit unbalanced.. cause in my opinion.. is empty from the middle to the bottom... the text is great.. but you could spread the words.. in different lines.. in different positions.. and in somehow saturate this half to compensate the upper half ... i dont know if i made my point.. but still looks great.. and to me is a 2 thumbs up deviation.. thats why i added it to my favs..

PS i cant transalte my thoughts as they are... my english sucks...

...and then there came along this bird...who smelt like turd and also happend to be a surd...mish mashed his words and plonked/perched himself on birch...days and years went by...the roots curled up and cried...oh sweet little birdy wont you see, what this surdy has done to me... then one stormy noon the little kids came upon the dune, so also the sun & the moon... they saw a little cloud, it looked just like a tree and they all danced with joy and glee...lo there came a lil flash flood and they all died without losing an ounce of blood. abrupt and curt...see what i have become.

Hehe, it's broccoli. Your design is really impressive. That corrigated cardboard implies a lot, and the cross section of lines, it's a suble element that seems to lead me to ideas about travel and personal journey, and the freedom of birds. Then their's lines leading beyond the page. Then their's some leading right through the broccoli tree. Which makes me think of home and a hearty nutricious staple, their's something very stable and and constant about it. Not to mension silly and child-like. Little broccoli as a full sized tree.

When I start on the poem, I'm immediately reminded of growing up and moving out (There died a tree Whose birds all flew away). Improbable patchwork dreams are like my dreams of being an astronomer/singer/superhero. And that little tern at the bottom which seems to be catching the frantic ink drops.

improbable patchwork dreams and how they map out make the most fascinating reading. keep me posted.

doubtlesslyjones [2004-11-02 01:08:09 +0000 UTC]

I'm intrigued by the way you've invoked the chimerical spirit of the poem with the improbably tree. I especially like the understated violence of the ink splatter, which feels like an oil/pollution slick under the tree, and also invokes a strange but awful sort of death. Reminds me that that broccoli was cut weeks before, and left to die very slowly in refrigerated supermarket hell. It also affirms my deep-rooted desire to never eat broccoli, lol. Beautiful.

i absolutely love the colors in this piece, it almost seems as if there is a warm humor there... i love the birds, it's just the freedom in them, and i don't quite know why.

madhs In reply to BlueLoserPony [2004-11-02 08:19:04 +0000 UTC]

Why do you love the birds? I'm guessing precisely because of 'the freedom in them'...

chenderson [2004-11-01 21:43:56 +0000 UTC]

Love the poem, and most of the picture. The ink spots are great, and so is the lower-half b&w, upper half colour effect.
I think perhaps the broccoli 'tree' is to 'real', though... I don't know... Everywhere else, the textures, the birds, the poem, the ink splots, has a certain 2D-ness to it that I like, and then the broccoli just seems so 3D. That might have been what you intended, of course. I just think it would be nicer if it was 'flatter'.
I also really don't like the pink elastic with the "Once upon a time...". It just looks so... what's the word? Not clichΓ©, but... eh. Not kitchy, either, but that's all I can come up with. =/ Too... I don't know. Pretty. Superficial. To me, it clashes with the rest of it.
Sheesh. Now it looks like I really hated this or something. I actually think it's really cool. The idea of the broccoli tree is really great, too. <3

madhs In reply to chenderson [2004-11-02 08:22:30 +0000 UTC]

hmmm...
I was going for the whole 'improbability' thing... first, that its a brocolli masquerading as a tree and that too such a lush one as that.
If I rework this one, I'll definitely keep all this in mind. thanks!

I really like this, it is such a treat for the eyes with the different colors and textures.
The text on the pink rubber band seems a little out of place, but the more I think about it, the more "out of place" seems like an ok thing, because that one little section seems so foofy and princess-y in contast to everything else around it.
So I like, I like.
