The Eye-lander as well as the freaks of TF2 can be deformed sprits/humans. SWEET!
Demo loves weapons. He will carry a lot of them. Small knives, sword, some small bombs and smoke bombs Etc. So of course when he discover the Eye lander he fell in love but he was unaware of the spirit that lurks within it.

I feel some spirits will be trap within objects, just how some spirits can infect mortal beings, some have the ability to get trap within humans. Also an idea to keep in mind about Merasmus and his interactions with the spirits. Maybe he capture some evil ones? Like the eye lander? Perhaps. I would say he is a strong fire bender, who needs a lot of control of his energy to trap some of them. Eyelander could be an old foe he battle long ago.

While Meramus was teaching Scout, Pyro and Soldier, Demo took the sword to learn how to use it. While holding it, Demo will hear a voice and it will slowly control him!
