Description
This is my first attempt at oil painting and as such I would really appreciate tips, feedback and critiqueDaddeee!
Oil on canvas, 16x20" (40x50cm)
My Dad, Felix Babatunde Williams, or 'Babs', as he was known.
Musician, artist and doobie-builder extraordinaire
I didn't speak to him for the last fifteen or twenty years of his life, though I always thought we would get together again one day.
I wasn't there when he died, and I didn't go to his funeral.
And now he's gone. Forever.
The seemingly massive issues we have with the living are pathetic and unimportant in the light of eternal silence.
There is no way to explain or apologise to the dead.
So love your loved ones *now*, faults and foibles and all. You don't need to love their faults, but love what and who they are to you, love their trust and their knowledge of exactly, precisely who you are, love the gifts they give you unseen every day of your life.
I love you Dad, you gave me the gifts of music and art and I gave you an ignored death.
I'm sorry, and this is the only way I can say it now.
Rest In Peace xx

A lovely tribute. The only thing I would suggest, and this depends on what you are going for, is to increase the contrast by exaggerating the lightest spots and darkest spots. Tough with oils, I know, but that's why you often see really thick white brush strokes on oil paintings. Very good for a first attempt with oils.

Thanks for that John, I really appreciate you taking the time to stop by and comment.
I had thought I was finished with this but, sitting here watching it dry the last day or two I've been thinking of continuing with it and that it does indeed look a little flat with regards to contrast.
I think I'm at that beginner stage with it of "wow, I made it this far, now I'm scared to do any more in case I ruin it" but pressing on through that is the only way to learn.
Thanks again for your comment
