Based on this utterly beautiful stock image byI was going to do it in colour, but it was going so well in just the burnt umber that I decided - following an artist friend's advice - to continue with it like that. So here's the end result.
This is my fourth oil painting, and, I'm very proud to say, my first sale - sold before it was even dry on the canvas.

Ha! Not only for beginners! There's a lot of luck involved in oils...I've done large oils where I only really like two or three brush strokes in it! But those two or three make it all worth the effort.

Ha - I know what you mean - I'm working on a portrait at the moment and the only part of it I'm happy with is the very end of her nose.
I want to redo everything else but leave that bit
