Description
I should say, I upgraded my tablet to a Cintiq a few weeks ago, and this is my first piece done on it!I'll a have a jumbo print of it at the AC art show; it's about 12x30 inches.

How gorgeous! I love the deep, rich colors and the amount of detail you put into this. The contrast between the top half and bottom half makes it very interesting!

This is amazing. I love the colours and all the detail you put into this. I can't believe this was all done digitally, it looks as if it were painted in traditional media! I also really like the use of shadows, it gives the piece a lot of contrast and makes it really stand out. Great work

Thank you! It definitely helps to have a tablet to get that hand-painted look. :>

I must completely agree. I'm trying my hand at achieving that painted look but I must admit it's hard x3

Wow, this is really beautiful! I love the composition, especially how the tail seems to flow around (okay, that might be my imagination - but it looks cool in my imagination anyway). Anyway, this is really really nice . Thank you for the favourites on mine, too

Selected for journal feature! [link]
And what a hard choice it was. But I like the darkness of this piece, and the way the detailed strokes on the bird contrast with the blurred strokes of the background.

This piece is just stunning, the details in the bird and branch, the soft colours, the way the tail fans out ... everything really. Instant

You have a Cintiq! I am incredibly jealous
I'm pretty new to digital art mself (I've only done one painting with my tablet!), so view my critique from that point of view, knowing full well that I definitely could not do better than this. On the other hand though, it's always good to stand back and get an objective look on appearance.
The softness in the colour palette you've chosen is really beautiful, and sets a nice tone for the piece. My only real concern is that you have two very distinct areas of dark and light (highlights primarily on the top half, and shadows primarily on the bottom). Did you use a reference photo for this? Anyway, that's slightly beside the point, I was just interested to know
As I said before, it's already looking very beautiful- but perhaps to make it even more stunning, you could consider having one of the branches pertruding slightly from the others so as to pick up some of the strong highlights from behind- just to break up that mid-section a little. I can see that you've highlighted it on the top- but it might benefit from a little random light (unless of course your objective was to have the bird's tail so huge that it creates massive shadows).
I think that this could really add to the over-all depth of the painting, because you've got a lot of great contrast happening on the bird- why not carry this through to the tree?
I hope that some of these suggestions are of use to you Once again I think it's a beautiful piece and clearly your gallery displays that you have a lot of outstanding talent.
I'm going to DA stalk you now!

Thank you very much! I must say you're very good at balancing your critiques, something that can be difficult to do. I'll definitely keep your thoughts in mind for future paintings and if/when I decide to revisit this one. :>

For this particular piece I used mostly Corel Painter X and a little bit of Photoshop. I don't really remember the names of the brush types I used off hand, but I think a couple of important ones were oil pastel and round camel hair.
I also used a Wacom Cintiq which helped a LOT! They're great but expensive. XP

ah yes tyvm....see i never use corel...i always use photoshop because I'm more familar with it.....but i can see that corel is more artist friendly...I may try it...
once again ty...and great art.

You should look into Painter! It's a fabulous program for actual digital painting, and in particular I find blending to be much easier (as opposed to Photoshop.)
You can probably get a good basic version on eBay for ~$20, or I think it comes with any Wacom tablet for free. ;>

heh i have a tablet...and i uh....aleady got it...(dont ask how ) but i tried it out....and i like the way it colors. But I suppose lineart is a bit of a difficulty for me....due to the fact that it's not smooth enough. It looks pretty good...though. Except for the FACT that I have absolutely NO idea what brushes to use for anime

The colour combinations in this are just very pretty - the rustic red and green go so lovely together. Those patterns and textures in the background are a terrific extra touch as well.

It's lovely; definitely superior to using a tablet. I found my productivity and speed went up quite a bit. I certainly would recommend it to anyone who uses a tablet on a daily or semi-weekly basis, if you can afford it. :>

Do you have the small or the big one? They seem very nice. Iβm just a poor student so I probably canβt afford it in years though. Kind of need a new computer firstβ¦
Anyway, I really like your art and I have been staking you for years now. Keep it up!.

maggock In reply to Isdrake [2008-01-22 17:40:52 +0000 UTC]
I have the little one and it's quite enough for me - I just don't have the desk space for the larger Cintiqs - which are essentially an additional monitor!
If it comes down to Cintiq vs. new computer, I'd go new computer first, then upgrade to Cintiq when you have the money. ;>

Looking good! If anything a bit dark, but that could be the effect you were going for. I can still see colours clearly, so don't worry about that. Nice

sheapuppydog In reply to lutrasilvereye [2008-01-22 18:09:07 +0000 UTC]
Like Stranger Eye said, it's a bit dark so that you can't see that fully detail of the coloring and texture of the feathers, but that might have been what you were going for.
Of course, either way, I love it. <333 The title for it makes it even better. So unique and... and.. I can't think of the word for it but it does exist in the dictionary somewhere! xD
