Description This is the 6th UFO I have completed. It's Maria van Scharrenburg's "water" themed embroidery: seashells (pattern id: 8475 F / 4915 E). It's 8 x 8 inches / 20 x 20 cm when completed and I had partially done the largest shell of the pattern before I set it aside sometime before October 2000. I can place the date so well as I'd kept the kit in it's original package and it had dog hairs in it from my last dog who died in October 2000 but it didn't have dog hairs from the dog I looked after for over 6 months in 2001.

If you wish to see the project as it progressed please wander over to my blog and check the September blog posts.

As I mentioned in my journal here the image on the kit package is not the same colour as what I ended up with - I'm really rather disappointed as I bought the kit because of the greens and browns shown and wasn't expecting blue and pink shells. As I really rather dislike pink I'm less than happy with the result despite it being a decent pattern and if I'd known it had so much pink in it I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

To save on searching for it the image is here:

The pattern itself is good, easy to read and the kit included plenty of floss to embroider with - I could probably manage to do most of a second version with what's left but I probably won't.

Here too I cannot show you the pattern as I also marked where I'd been with pen as I worked.

This is adooorable! I see what you mean, with the colors being more "harmonious" in the picture, but in the actual piece it works well with the blues.

Lovelovelove embroidery and needlework. Beautiful!

Yes it did

I decided I needed a "new project treat' and inspired by the lovely biscornu's you and your friend made I decided that making my first one would be a good small treat for me

YES!!! They are so quick and fun and that feeling of gratification really sticks with you AND you can look at it lovingly while you finish your fish

I've finished the first side and have it on my desk.. it's so pretty

I'll be using it to park needles with the thread still in that I need in a moment I don't really want to stick needles into the heavily embroidered mini pillows I have made so that's why I wanted to do one of these

Mattsma In reply to Magical525 [2012-09-19 14:09:26 +0000 UTC]

I know! I usually have three needles with thread going at once and stick it in mine. I can't wait to see how yours turned out

Magical525 In reply to Mattsma [2012-09-19 14:21:37 +0000 UTC]

I'm happy with the results so far - on the third and last colour now - just need to do 12 stitches in the lightest colour (can do that after I've finished this colour) and then the backstitching on the edge and then the "scary" bit starts lol I've been looking at your tutorials so will hopefully not do too badly

EXCELLENT!!! They are pretty simple once you have done one, then you sit back and say "OH! That's way too easy!" It's after that when you start obsessing about it....I'm guilty and I think :devKatkajay: might have one on her mind again too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Magical525 In reply to Mattsma [2012-09-20 08:33:38 +0000 UTC]

It probably would have been easier with a lower thread count as it would have been larger but I'm pleased with the results

Not sure about obsessing... need to do other stuff before I allow myself to do another

Mattsma In reply to Magical525 [2012-09-20 12:57:25 +0000 UTC]

Since I have made a few now I can tell you that working with evenweave is SOOOOOO much easier, but I agree a higher count is better as well as using a sharp embroidery needle for the whip stitch. I should add these little pointers to a third tutorial....if I have time I will

Magical525 In reply to Mattsma [2012-09-20 13:31:47 +0000 UTC]

I'll make a note of that for the future

I did use a sharp needle but I only had a large one on hand that had a big enough eye for the thread so that might have made things more difficult - my knee wasn't up to the trek to the attic to get all the sewing needles down (I only keep ones I use a lot on hand - the rest live with my sewing stash in the attic.).

Sounds good

A stash in the attic? I'm just a little envious

Yeah - got loads of quilting fabric up there, beads, craft paint - stencils, sewing threads (I keep my embroidery threads downstairs) misc interfacings, ribbons, other bits and pieces books (both embroidery and quilting) and some random stuff that occasionally ends up on an art quilt. Lots of stuff I collected when I had a job (pre kids) and now keep my in materials now that I don't work any more.

Oh and did I mention my quilting UFO's? No? Ah well.. got a good 50 lurking at me too lol

It's very pretty, but doesn't match the package picture. So strange. At least you have the extra floss problem. I'd rather have that any day. I can always stash it in the misc. floss bag for random uses.

Magical525 In reply to elphaba-rose-wilde [2012-09-18 07:16:33 +0000 UTC]

indeed - it's very odd. I first considered that it might be from sunlight but the shop i got it at was in a mall/shopping centre and so it got no daylight there and I have always kept my stuff in boxes out of direct sunlight to protect the threads from discolouring.

Hehe yeah - I've stashed it in a jar for now.. not sure what to do with them though.

Sometimes you can get lucky and have a color you need in there. Or it works great for heavy duty repair work. I used to have quite a collection of leftovers, back when I was more active with cross stitching.

Magical525 In reply to elphaba-rose-wilde [2012-09-19 07:23:35 +0000 UTC]

Right tbh I used to throw the leftovers away unless I had lots and the chart told me which colours they were so i could add them to the stash. sheer waste of course but well.. too late to change that now.

Yup. Although it would be smart to actually know what color it was...

Magical525 In reply to elphaba-rose-wilde [2012-09-20 20:48:27 +0000 UTC]

yeah - unfortunately many kits don't give that information

elphaba-rose-wilde In reply to Magical525 [2012-09-22 22:12:16 +0000 UTC]

It's a pain really. Especially if you happen to run out or have something happen to the thread. In my house that's a likely problem with all the four-leggeds running around. If I have the DMC color number I can at least get some to replace and carry on.

Magical525 In reply to elphaba-rose-wilde [2012-09-22 22:48:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it is - I thought I'd not have enough of one colour cos I'd lost a bit though fortunately I found it again later on and could finish so it was a minor panic. I do find doing kits worrying though because I worry that I won't have enough.
