I'm not a professional, I'm still in college, so don't take what I say as law.This was how I learned to draw from reference in my life drawing class in college and I figured I'd share because that class restructured how I draw everything and I noticed a HUGE improvement in my work after taking it. ;v; Β There's no shame in using reference and if anyone tells you otherwise they're an idiot. (reference is different than tracing, mind you)

helpful~ we do lots of drawing from live models in class, but the teachers seem to think drawing from photo reference is too easy to bother with :S

I think drawing from life is definitely the best way to learn. There's so much more information when you're live translating 3D to 2D. But not everyone has access to a live model class so that's when photo refs come in handy. Still, I know my 4 years of figure drawing drastically improved my eye and I use those skills even when using a 2D ref to try to visualize the 3D

oh, i don't disagree, it does make a big difference working from live models! but at my school, we only had live models every other week, and obviously none during the summer. so much of my practice work for anatomy and things came from referencing your photos to be honest. i always keep your page bookmarked on my phone!
