Description Size: 6 inches Tall and 5 inches Long.

I decided to experiment with Air Dry Clay. I'm hoping I can be successful enough to sell these.

I probably won't be doing this fur style again because it added a lot of unnecessary weight and layers to the sculpture, however it's drying much better then I expected. Unlike the legs, which was an epic fail on my part. I KNOW from past experience that I should have wrapped the legs and let them dry much much slower. Instead I was an idiot and they dried to fast so every leg has cracked. If it wasn't for the wire armature one would of broken off. Damnit.

On a side note the wire armature IS the issue on the broken leg. I made the wire on the back legs too long. I considered clipping it back, after, but I'm afraid the vibration would cause breakage.

I did look at a million tutorials before doing this, but like anything you just have to figure it out yourself. And the reviews for air dry clay were never that great, but it's my only option right now. Wish me luck lol.

The plan now is to fix the legs, dry them last, and auction this critter off. And yes he'd be under a "buy at your own risk" since it's my first one and I'm still learning

Male or Female, he's not either, but I refer to him as a he because originally it was going to be male. But the fur technique covers up any sort of questions.. so he can be either gender

I am new to air drying clay as well- what do you mean by "wrap the legs"? What do you wrap them with etc.? Thank you.

I wrap any thin parts in damp paper towels, so that they do not dry faster then the larger parts of the body. But you've got to be careful if the paper towel is too wet it can causes the pieces to crack or get too soggy.

I tried to use wire on one of my dragons and I found out after that the clay shrinks so it is best not to put anything inside of it

The one thing I've learned with this clay is NOT to use any armature...especially wire or wood. after several models I quit using armatures and haven't had any unsightly cracking or breaking since. i actually dont recomend this type of clay for highly detailed works, like yours and mine. ive gotten to a point where in order to keep the fine fur details on mine intact...i seal them with Crazy Glue. it works like magic and makes the piece more durable!

Thanks for the info, that was really helpful. I've since bought some sculpey clay and a toaster oven, but I haven't had a chance to sit down and make anything. But I still want to revisit the air dry clay and make it work!

You should. It's fun, but it can be depressing when it breaks. However it makes you feel accomplished in the end. lol its worth giving it a go for sure

That is so cute. Great work in the anatomy--very symmetrical, and that cruddy clay look gives a really good illusion of fur.
