I had a lot typed up here but this website ate itTo summarize: I use this technique to get started. For me it's faster and less frustrating than starting with line art. I hope somebody can get some use from it.
Please let me know if there are any errors or unclear parts.
UPDATE: It wasn't the best choice to go with the sprite I did so I added some extra examples that might be better.

This is very helpful for the front view of sprites, but the main problem I have is imaging how a PokΓ©mon should look from behind, even when I've already completed the main sprite. If you could do some kind of tutorial for that it'd be very helpful.Β

Unfortunately I haven't done much with backsprites so I don't think I'll be able to make a tutorial like that.
