Really moody capture. I like the way the white sky meets buildings!
And the first word that came up: Business

eh, I can't say since I've never been, but cities in general just bring that to mind...

NYC again? I love that place I went there once.
I love this photograph.
First thing I think of? How I'm lost inside the photo. lost in the city.... and very small..
and want to walk up that street... towards the light.
or something..
lol sorry I'm weird.

for me there is..
+the people, the mass of gray,
only thing special, a daily sun ray,
all of them passing by,
im alone and shy
+watching closely as they die,
looking at the doves fly,
cars and trains driving through,
all is the same, its true
+everything doing whats popular,
some are special, unpopular,
a thinker like me,
no matter he or she.

The first thing I thought was 'gritty city life'.
Whenever I go into NYC I always feel dirty, and when I get home I feel like I have to wash my hair. Is it just me, or does oil build up on your hair faster there?
I really like this picture, though. It's got this feeling to it that makes me want to just sit back and look at it. I've probably spent too much time just looking at it already, haha.

Magnanimously In reply to Avalbaine [2006-02-04 16:55:56 +0000 UTC]
That's actually very true. I always feel like I need to wash my hair too but that's only after being in overcrowded, touristy areas. There are other parts of the city where people actually live and they're really nice.
Glad to see you find it so hypnotizing.

The cold, bare and nearly mechanical life in the big city... If someone has ever wondered why Fritz Lang have chosen NYC as the prototype for his "Metropolis" this view could be the perfect answer.

I don't know if I disagree with you but I love NYC.
Who's Fritz Lang and what's Metropolis?

LostFaust In reply to Magnanimously [2006-01-31 07:26:17 +0000 UTC]
Hehe... you asked about the shot so that's what I've commented. I couldn't possibly say anything about NYC since I've never visited it and - as with most cities - I would find it hard to fully characterize it in a single shot. Like any living organism (and I tend to see a city as a living organism rather than a simple set of buildings) a city has a rather complex personality made of many different features, some good, some bad, others in between.
Fritz Lang is (in my oppinion) probably one of the greatest film directors that has ever lived. Metropolis (filmed in 1927 and for many its masterpiece) is one of the first serious Sci-Fi movies. It discribes a society divided between "planners" (thinkers that make plans but are unable to actually do anything with their hands) and "workers" (that can do anything but are unable to think for themselves). The punchline is: "There can be no understanding between the hands and the brain unless the heart acts as mediator"
If you don't really believe that movies shoud be just nice pictures with great visual effects and overwelming soundtracks I'd seriously recomend that you'd try to find it somewhere. I am just sorry that in the latest restored version - 2001 - they've included this silly soundtrack that definitellky has nothing to do with the spirit of the movie so I usually turn of the sound (it is an old mute B&W film anyway )

That's an interesting movie. So who's the heart that acts as the mediator?
Any idea where I can get this movie? 1927 is a long time ago. This movie/idea should be redone justifiably.

LostFaust In reply to Magnanimously [2006-02-06 00:43:22 +0000 UTC]
well... in the movie the heart seem to be a creation... something built to better control the "hands". It didn't turned out exactly as meanted... but that would be telling the whole movie... woudn't it?
I'm not sure... I managed to buy this 2001 version from a local store but I guess most video clubs will have it. You should also be able to buy it online but I would certainly advise you try to see it first - being an old b&w movie and all... it might not be your style and giving $25 for something we don't really know may be a long shot for those less adventurous than me .
Anyway... I'd find it had to believe that there isn't a single video club in NYC having it.
I agree with you... maybe one day I may be able to convince a couple of friends of mine to create a soundtrack for it... I'm not really a brilliant composer (I seem to work better with light than with sound )

I never go to video stores. I don't think I want to spend $25 on it either. I guess I'll take your word for it and just know that it's a great movie. I'm sure I'll eventually come across it one day. I'll think of you when I watch it and I'll tell you my opinion of it.
I actually really like black and white movies. I've come across a few silent films on tv while channel surfing and they were surprisingly really interesting. Very different, but I liked them. It's funny but I think a lot of men in old movies wore make-up. Very strange make-up too.

LostFaust In reply to Magnanimously [2006-02-10 21:51:46 +0000 UTC]
hehe... that's because the old films had little sensitivity so they had to increase the contrast artificially. If they'd not use makeup most likely you wouldn't be able to notice their features, All you'd see would be gray all over... that's why they look like even more B&W than by the 30's and 40's... when the film got more sensitive.

Magnanimously In reply to LostFaust [2006-02-20 18:59:15 +0000 UTC]
Oh that makes a lot of sense. I assumed that they put on that make-up because they thought it made them look better and I wondered how they could ever think that. Even the men wore dark lipstick and their eyes looked like racoon eyes. I thought that was just for some weird asthetic purpose but turns out it was necessary for contrast. How do you know all this?

Well, it looks like the people on the picture are just running from place to place. It's always like that in big cities: no one stands still, they're all going somewhere. With a hurry.

Wow that's a great and very true quote. Where is it from?
That quote applies so well to money and power. As well as most other things.
Very interesting opinion of the photo. Now that I look at it I see what you mean.
Thank you for sharing those thoughts.

its from Fight Club, Brad Pitt says that line in the bar after Edward Norton (the main guy that you see through the whole movie) finds out that his apartment was blown up

So Brad Pitt says that about Ed Norton's apartment? That it "owns him"?
Sounds interesting. I should see that movie. It's like a classic and I've never seen it. I should be ashamed right? LOL

Lol "old movie". I like that, thanks. Black and white photography isn't necessarily 40's. It's classic.
