Description
Just a little collage of some aspects of the Sea Wolves picture. You can see the staggered setup of the wave-instances and the distance-fog cube in the top-down view. Please note, that I have a transparent material cube stacked into the actualy fog cube to have it visible in the viewport, and that is the cube you see there. That's why there are some reflections at the top side. During render, I set this cube to invisible and only the fog remains.
At the side are the shader settings for the fog (sss) cube. (the value that's been cut off reads 10.000) but these have to be adapted for other sizes and lighting of course.
Rearmost is a takeout from the perspective view of the main DAZ3D Studio viewport for reference. Lighting consists of a the HDRI sky and two distant lights (side and a low fill light from the rear). On huge area pictures like this, distant lights tend to work better than spots.
Finally in the background you can see the post work changes in Photoshop using the RAW filter and some editing on the guys skin, actually not that much.

I'll try and do this kind of stuff more often!

Very interesting
Shadows on the guy. It looks like the sub-d is disabled on the character. Not?

Yes, I actually copied him from another pic where I disabled sub-d, then I forgot to turn it back on. So you caught me there.
But I was more concerned with the water in this picture, so I decided to simply fix it in Photoshop afterwards

Oh, I just asked This problem manifests itself with very bright point/distant lights, since the narrowly directed rays clearly delineate the boundaries of polygons without smoothing sub-d. With the arealight/dome, borders are more blurred.

Thanks for sharing this Magnus - it's really interesting. Your idea of having a material cube inside the fog cube to show up on-screen is great! I can see I've been using some wrong settings for my one which is probably why it didn't work on some of my scenes. The other thing I found was that sometimes I could see the edges and corners of the cube in my scenes unless I scaled it up VERY large, but then the computer wouldn't render the scene. So I was thinking if my 'cube' was a 'sphere' instead, it would eliminate my edges and corners showing? I haven't tried it yet though.

I wonder. Usually on an outside scene I chose the cube sides to be outside the camera frame. But with low sss scale meaning just a little distance haze, that is not really necessary.
The cubes can actually be pretty large (from 10 k to 50 k units (cm) in size easily, but I never had any related crashes. But again that's only convenience on my part, they do not need to be that large for most applications.
Of course there is no need to use a cube. I actually only use it because it's a pretty simply geometric shape that's easy to handle.

I'll do some experimentingΒ Β
I just seen a preview for a Netfix movie coming November - "Outlaw King", about the story of your Scottish project! You might be able to do a 'tie-in' with its release!Β Β

Sounds interesting though I always have a slight nervous tick and twitch in the eye when it comes to the style of modern documentaries. I'll keep an eye out, but I don't know if I manage, got a personal project/commssion thingy going that's got to be completed first.Β
But I'm looking forward to your experimenting

Yes, I think as it will be more for entertainment, the Netflix movie will made to be dramatic rather than realistic, but it could have some good scenes in itΒ Β
