Description

In Witchwinter manifestations of entities that are by some called outsiders occur. These creatures, varied as they are, often remind of amorphous or mollusc aquatic live, but not actually recorded animals. Whether they exist in the deepest depth of the oceans of this or another world - or in the space between the stars – nobody knows. Outsiders do appear in forms resembling humans or animals, but those could be delusions on part of the witnesses.

Outsider appearances are, as the name suggests, essentially non-euclidic. They may reach immense scale, but with a strong sense of dimensional distortion, so their real size or distance is hard to fathom. Like a mirage, they do not really manifest in physical form, but sometimes they start to warp reality just so slightly with their presence. Most often this results in atmospheric disturbances or shows of light, and starts to interfere harmfully with higher life forms.

There is little proof that the creatures care about or even notice these occurrences. They could just be dreaming, if they are capable of dreaming, for all that is known. Yet some believe in a connection to human psychological, spiritual – magical if you wish - states and Outsiders’ appearances. Human inquisitiveness always brought some of the more daring or deranged individuals to delve into the unknown – and the forbidden.

For in most civilized cultures this is viewed as witchcraft and heavily sanctioned. And it is forbidden with good reason. While to people living a nomadic life, often with a shamanistic spiritual outlook, the Outsiders are not much different to any other natural phenomenon, calling an Outsider manifestation on a large settlement like a city can amount to Armageddon, tainting anything in its path and leaving the living envying the dead. Yet there are always those that are attracted to this kind of power.

This picture: Since a couple of people wanted to see more of Maralah (find her here:  ), here we go. I decided to promote her to Witchwinter native in her own rights. Of course nobody with a sane mind would thank me for this kind of honor. There are no happy hunting grounds of native American folklore in this place, the dead – and sometimes the living – wander the dreary nightmarish plains devastated by Outsider presence.

I guess I'll post some stuff on the Witchwinter setting with the next picture.

Daz3D Iray Render ~3500 Iterations, 12 h  learned some new post work in PS. Oh well - just wanted to post her, then I could not resist new Storm suite and then things started to get weird...

lol... no I did not read them, but I got some lovecraft library including original arkham house letter collections. But lately I don't read much, to busy getting stuff out.

This was a little homage (and it's tagged as such), but it's not really situated in the chtulhu myth.

I read up on the series on Wikipedia. Which of the Laundry Files did you read? What's your impression of them in relation to Lovecrafts' works?
..
The Chtulhu stuff is pretty much open source, but some of the interpretations (the notorious Derleth, not to mention Hohlbein...) don't quite work for me...

Here's a timeline of the books/stories by the author himself:

www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-…

Looking at that it seems I've only actually read the first few (Atrocity Archives, Jennifer Morgue, and some shorts), and it's also been some time ago. They left quite an impression on me though (Loved the combo of humour + banal bureaucracy + otherworldly goings on). Just good fun.

I've only read a few original Lovecraft stories (don't quite like his prose style) and most of my Mythos knowledge comes from the old Chaosium Call of Cthulhu RPG

So I can't really compare them.

I think Horse might have the right idea.

Fantastic character and world creation!! She (and the horse) look totally convincing as being a little spooked by the 'outsider' manifestation and great job on the rain/wet figures

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Magnus-Strindboem In reply to Kibosh-1 [2018-11-28 21:17:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah poor horsy has little fun. But horses generally are quite adapted to the strategy of running away, so it's doing it's job. Maralah on the other hand, was born trouble and shows little signs of changing. Which is good, because this way she can appear a lot in dramatic pictures

I experimented with the rain and wetness a bit, and I'm not completely satisfied with my solutions, but that's live and learn But it was a lot of fun, I always wanted to do a huge tentaculous monstrousity looming at the horizon. I mean who would not?

Kibosh-1 In reply to Magnus-Strindboem [2018-11-29 03:12:48 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! A huge monstrosity at the horizon.. perfect

Funny, I'm reading a book where the 'hero' is actually a coward and he considers horses an excellent method of running away as quickly as possible!! On the other hand it is good you have a character who loves to be in the middle of danger!

Was hast den neues gelernt?

Magnus-Strindboem In reply to PSK-Projekt4D [2018-11-27 20:02:35 +0000 UTC]

Bin was malen angeht einfach völlig untalentiert.

Great picture with a nasty lovecraftian creature.

Does the Witchwinter a creation of yours ?

About the scientific part, between Maralah and Marina, I can't really decide who is the more... gifted.

Anyway, she look like a tough woman, even if this creature looks a little too big for her (or for anyone, I must say).

Magnus-Strindboem In reply to Mekheke [2018-11-27 16:49:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it's close. I was tempted to cheat, but then fed the plastic surgeon to the critters in the basement. Yeah Witchwinter is a setting I created to have a horror or gothic backdrop, and though it's  clearly in spirit with the New England lovecraftian settings (usually predating the protagonists a few generations) those creatures are not actually entities of the Chtulhu lore as Witchwinter is not supposed to be a place on this earth. Since I never can resist the temptation to produce walls of text, more will follow

*Spoiler Warning* yup - she's tough *lol*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mekheke In reply to Magnus-Strindboem [2018-12-01 16:40:06 +0000 UTC]

You were tempted to cheat, but you didn't do it, which prove you are a good guy.

I have also in my story some Lovecraft-inspired creatures in a certain area of the world.

I think when I'll finish the current arc, I'll take time to define and explain more the world.

Anyway, I'm curious to see and learn more about your story. ^^

Thanks . Though I think there is a lot of space for improvement, but then there always is . But I'm very satisfied with the storm system, I did not use the storm fog here, but the lightning really is awesome, though it looses a bit in this version due to the distance fog  and desaturation.

Tinnuien [2018-11-26 23:21:51 +0000 UTC]

I love the emotions of both faces, the wetness of fur and skin and the feeling of storm. If I may add a tiny critique: I think, your rain from the  was a bit better, but this may be due the different lighting situation.

I love the backstory and how it is connected to the Witchwinter storyline. I'm looking forward to the next picture in this setting. Especially because of the merry holidays ahead of us

Magnus-Strindboem In reply to Tinnuien [2018-11-27 08:27:01 +0000 UTC]

You're right about the rain. I really have to light and setup and test render beforehand, because the complete renders simply take to long to judge the result and make adjustments.

But more story line is sure to come. I just have to avoid setting up walls of text

Mekheke In reply to Magnus-Strindboem [2018-11-27 15:03:57 +0000 UTC]

Good luck for not making walls of texts. For me, it started with 3 or 4 lines of text and now I am at 60 lines for my longest text !

I think it became longer when I started to makes my characters talk.
