Rakan stopped to look around, her fury melting into apprehension.

Nothing was moving, even the wind had stopped. The air grew stale, thick, drawing breath got ever more laborious until she felt suffocated. With it came a pain that quickly turned into a piercing throb in her head, inducing nausea that made her double over.

She tried to get a grip on herself. She must have stumbled into an overgrown pond or flooded meadow, for she stood ankle deep in water. A splash of water would do her good.

Trying to reach down felt like pushing through briars naked – a crisscross of jabs and cutting pains rolled over her skin. Only now she noticed that she was covered bruises and cuts, some deep and moist with blood.

Yet she had not memory of being ever hit during the fight. The pain and headache grew ever stronger, and with it panic, made her throw up.

All around her bodies started to move, enemies that ought to have been dead rose from the bog, staring blankly at first, but then they turned their heads in her direction, with a purpose.

A skull splitting agony drove all thought from her, all will to fight, all doubt at what happened. Everything became first dim, then dark. Someone hit her and then, as she passed out, brutal hands groped her and dragged her away.

It's actually based on a dance pose. I do that often, they are more expressive and that helps to counter the limits of 3D, especially in conveying motion and feelings.

That's easy. just don't get hit. 

You can roll a six a thousand times on a dice in a row. There's no law againt it.

Just always chose the right reality. 

In this case someone else chose otherwise and was stronger... or at least more experienced at the game.

I will call this the F5 effect. If you save game after killing each enemy, you can easily go through a single player game.

From the side it will look as if you defeated many opponents at a time, but in fact you have already died many times during this battle before you succeed in making a successful attempt.

It's a comparison. 

I'll try and see if it works for explanantion.

No saving. But you can create new instances/tries from any point. (If you have energy)

It's massively multiplayer. 

There is an energy or hit points that gives the contestants power.

No fourth wall. Everybody plays but not everybody is aware of that. Any life plays.

Nobody tells you the rules.

If there are few players in your instance you loose power.

You can hide in an instance, but if you run out energy there, you die.

If you let your death happen without alternative instances, you die. This is what happens to most people. Most are not aware that there are other options.


The amount of energy is fixed over all.

Unclaimed energy is distributed to new life. 

You can use energy to keep up instances or powers. This energy can be taken by winning fights.

You can give energy to others for free or service. Any deal is possible. 

(Often it's pretty feudal )

You can kill an enemy and devour his remaining energy and get his skills. Devour him, quite literally.

Incorporate him into yourself. 

If you have enough power or skill you can hack most of the enemies game. 


In the top tiers there are both very powerful single players but also clans of many less powered players working together. 


A crude comparison, but not completely wrong.

It is even very similar, but implemented differently.

What you get killed for real in that game? 

Actually, yes I do remember the game. But warping time is actually pretty uneconomic. It's usually simpler to just switch realities and pitch for getting the other one to drop even further out of the sweet spot in his counter move.
