Nope; Hyrule doesn't extend down into the desert.

Well, she doesn't dislike them, but she doesn't have any reason to take care of them. Plus, they've been managing pretty well on their own

Y'know, Link, there could be a reason for that. There could be a reason why you only care about Zelda's wellbeing. Maybe. Ganondorf gets it, I think.

Does Link just not realize who he's been traveling and speaking with all this time or do the people of Hyrule not know the name of the King of the Gerudo yet?

They just don't know his name. If they do know one, it's probably his old man's name (he was a lot more ruthless and infamous....and I don't think he was technically a Gerudo. I still need to iron that out fully). Anyways, so yeah, only the communities around the desert would know about Ganondorf, and Link wouldn't have bothered to learn about it while he was there.

Link's in for a surprise then, isn't he? Also, in original game art (I think from one of the guide books) they show Ganon as he appeared before being corrupted entirely by the TriForce. He looked like a light skinned Hylian, very muscular build, and had dark hair with a goatee/mustache combo. So you could possibly base that concept for your idea of Ganondorf's father? I dunno, just a small suggestion.

Interesting...I like that idea, thanks! I'll definitely have to find that art and check it out

After I wrote the comment, I went searching for the image but turned up nothing. I can't remember where I had seen it before. It might actually not be a part of the official art and may be part of one of the early Zelda mangas from around the time A Link to the Past came out.

You could probably find it in a scanned version of the Link to the Past manga. But I could be wrong.
