Who is Cubia?

In the .HACK// Games, there is an artifact/weapon/concept/power known as the "key of the Twilight". You can think of the Key of the Twilight as the 'Kingdom Hearts', the 'Golden Sun' or the 'Ultimate power' of the series as it is a recurring thing in the .HACK series.

Cubia is the major enemy of the .HACK series. Cubia is the 'anti-existence' of the 'Key of the Twilight'. If the 'Key of the Twilight' is considered the 'light', then 'Cubia' is the hidden 'shadow' cast by the light and thus Darkness.

Therefore you cannot defeat Cubia using the Key of the Twilight since they are two sides of the same coin. Likewise if you destroy the Key of the Twilight, Cubia will also be destroyed (as demonstrated by Black Rose smashing Kite's Twilight Bracelet in the original PS2 game of .HACK).

Think of Cubia as a huge monster a major boss of most .HACK games.

Who is Cubia PC Form?

Cubia in every major game has been depicted as a grotesque looking skull monster with vines/branches sticking out. BUT in the Manga called '.HACK//XXXX' (Pronounced DOT HACK the FOURTH) - the authors gave Cubia a human appearance known as "Cubia PC form" and made him an anti-hero.

This Cubia has his own sad backstory. When Harald Hoerwick created his 'daughter' and the ultimate A.I. named Aura, the A.I. named Cubia PC form was also created at the same time. Therefore Aura and Cubia are considered twins.

But Harald only gave Aura his paternal love and ignored the existence of Cubia. All Cubia wanted was to love, to be loved, to grow and become accepted. But instead Harald regarded Cubia as 'useless scrap data'.

Cubia was then 'adopted' by the rogue program 'Morganna' and given a purpose to destroy Aura. Cubia becomes the double agent to befriend Kite and Black Rose with the intent of taking the Twilight Bracelet for himself. The Twilight Bracelet at this time carried the title of 'Key of the Twilight'.

Long story short, Black Rose discovers Cubia's intention, Cubia later attacks Kite to try and take his bracelet. Black Rose destroys the bracelet leading to Cubia's death. Kite admits to a dying Cubia that he never blamed Cubia for what he did, and that he knew he was an NPC all along and that it didn't matter because they would always be friends.

A teary Cubia dies, having found closure from making friends and acceptance. His data subsequently gets deleted and dies a hero.

You could think of Cubia and Kite's relationship as being similar to Eugeo and Kirito (for Sword Art fans).

Why a Scythe?

The Original Manga .HACK//XXXX depicts Cubia as a 'Twin Blade' class (i.e. similar to Kite). But in the PSP game .HACK//LINK - Cubia PC Form becomes a party member and is depicted as a 'Flick Reaper' class (i.e. Scythe User).

Personally I felt Cubia looked more badass as a Scythe User, so I decided to go with his .HACK//LINK weapon instead.

How I made this?

The model of Cubia ripped from .HACK//LINK available on Model's resource was pretty low poly, the clothes looked blocky-ish. So I decided to model his outfit again from scratch to give it a little more definition. I then textured my new outfit using the official gamerip textures ripped from .HACK//LINK.

The Hair is a gamerip, so I did not model the hair. I did however meshmod the hair and changed the length of the locks and bangs to match his appearance from the .HACK//XXXX manga.

I also made HD models for the other parts of the outfit from scratch such as the belt buckles, the side belts, the bag + straps, and his hair pin using the .HACK//XXXX manga as reference images. (I own both volumes of .HACK//XXXX manga).

I modelled his Scythe too, which will be released when Marluxia's scythes get released later this year.

The character model however is not for sharing at this point in time.
