Description Under a slow-moving river which runs through the middle of a grassy plain somewhere on Mars ll, a mated pair of Spoon-Jawed Sicklebacks (Suchops longirostris) have built a large nest from which their eggs will hatch. The male is larger than the female, and the mated pair both regularly patrol the nest and safeguard it from smaller, opportunists such as shark-snakes, crustaceans and other creatures which may try to sneak into the nest and eat the eggs. The 1.3-meter-long rostrums, which are lined with small, pointed teeth and end with spoon-shaped cusps armed with false teeth, a defining characteristic of the 3.5-meter-long predatory fish which helps them to snap and restrain their small prey before they can get swallowed, may be enough to scare many equally small culprits away.
