Description
18"x22"Graphite pencils 3H/HB/2B/4B, Blending stump & brush, Kneadable eraser, Tombow elastomer eraser.
Strathmore 500 series bristol board (smooth plate finish)
This is my entry for The National Open Art Competition UK. Unfortunately it wasn't selected for the shortlist but I'm pleased with the piece as it personally represents a big leap in scale, detail and patience. It is roughly twice the size of my previous work and I learnt a lot working on this beast.
I'd like to thank Samantha Barbour for kindly letting me use and modify her original photo as reference... blind-eyephotography.deviantar…
Detail and stage-by-stage shots will be up soon on my website/blog and Facebook page...

MAYBE ONE DAY I TOO WILL BE ABLE TO DO THIS KIND OF ART. FOR NOW I AM CONTENT TO SIT BACK, OPEN-MOUTH AND STARE AT THIS PIECE OF INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL WORK.

That jarring moment when you read what the photographer wrote about his photo and it includes the words "Graphite pencils".
Welp, you fooled me. Good work.

This is maybe the single best pencil drawing I have ever seen. I cannot believe you were not selected. I actually feel a bit outraged about that.

This is absolutely unbelievable! Do you mind me asking how you get the white hairs? This is something I have been struggling with for a while and cannot figure out the appropriate technique.

Thank you Jessica! The way I do the hairs is to mark out the outline and shade the whole area lightly. This way I can remove the hair progressively with an eraser, then darken the surrounding area. The key is not to use too much graphite that cannot be erased back to pure white. Sometimes I make mistakes on that score, but that's art for you.

This is one of the finest pieces of photorealistic pencil drawing I've ever seen. For once in my life I'm really struggling to see that it's not a photo. I can't believe you didn't even get through to the short list for the NOA, I'll be very interested to see what did. You've got a new fan !!!
