Description
18"x22"Graphite pencils 3H/HB/2B/4B, Blending stump & brush, Kneadable eraser, Tombow elastomer eraser.
Strathmore 500 series bristol board (smooth plate finish)
This is my entry for The National Open Art Competition UK. Unfortunately it wasn't selected for the shortlist but I'm pleased with the piece as it personally represents a big leap in scale, detail and patience. It is roughly twice the size of my previous work and I learnt a lot working on this beast.

Yes, the mighty Tombow was in use - but also kneadable erasers and a few other tools. It probably took me somewhere between 75-100 hours. Bit of a guess though as it was done in tandem with other work.

I'm not looking to sell the original at the moment so I can use it in potential shows. I'm currently working on a limited edition print run though. I'll pop up an announcement when they're ready.

photo realistic drawing is where i've been aiming for ever since i took up becoming an artist and naturally i look for a lot of it online and this is one of the best i've seen in a while. fantastic job!
i'd love to know how you go about getting such great highlights and the rendering of all the tiny hairs on such a dark drawing...

The hairs are outlined and worked back up to white/grey with erasers. Then it's a case of subtly shading these with various grades of pencil to achieve the desired effect.

You're welcome! i guess using only a 4B as your darkest pencil makes the erasing possible. i'd have been using 7B all over the place here and found myself stuck haha.

Thanks! Yeah - I only go darker than 2B or 4B when I know I've got the details licked otherwise it's pretty hard to undo. In general, I rarely use anything darker than 4B anyways...the darker you go, the shinier the graphite.
