Description I made a bookmark for every book I read in 2014. There are only four of them...that's kind of sad. Here's hoping 2015 will yield more bookmarks.

EDIT: I actually read seven books last year - and completely forgot about three of them! Here's one more bookmark; the others will come when I figure out what's going on them.

This is a really amazing little hobby, or tradition, or whatever it may be called. This will probably sound weird, but you're a really cool person. Respect, bro.

I should really catch up on these...

I wish I had catching up to do. I've barely gotten to read at all. I may take these artworks as recommendations on what to read, actually.

All of them were good books.

I've heard of some, and it seems (given what we've decided to do with our freetime) that we have some similar tastes, I'm sure i'd enjoy them.

Pff, oh jeez, I forgot to actually tell you how good your work is!  Of the books there I have read, you captured them perfectly.  Breq going into the inn, and jumping off the bridge as it breaks, such good stuff.  Very kinetic.  And the discovery of Rama itself, genius!  Though is that the door opening on the completely darkened cylinder, or the ship as it approaches and it finally comes in sight?

Endeavor's at the bottom, Rama's at the top, with the sun behind it.

Oh my god, your work is amazing!  Those are some amazing books, too.  The Martian is on my pile of books to read (literally 2 feet from where I'm sitting), and I tried Ancillary Sword after loving the very difficult but extremely rewarding Ancillary Justice. I definitely want to give Sword another shot since the first one was so good, but without a glossary or index of who the characters are (since her descriptions are very sparse and names run together), so do you know of any good fan sites that would help straighten out who some of the characters are once I start again?

Also, you should totally check out the Red Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson if you haven't.  Incredible books about the colonization of Mars about 50 years in the future, though the first mission sets out in the 2020's.  I've read the first two so far (Red Mars, Green Mars) and the third is in the same pile as The Martian.  Have to take a break from the red planet a bit, I think!  But really, check them out, they're incredible.  You get to watch an entire world die and be born again.

Yes, Red Mars is next on my reading list! (I'm reading Earthsea now) I'm looking forward to it.

Sword's worth picking up again. Why don't I just list the characters I remember off the top of my head for your quick reference. I don't know where there might be a more comprehensive list but these are the important ones:

Lieutenants Tisarwat, Seivarden, and Ekalu; Kalr Eight and Five; Medic, Mercy of Kalr
Captain Hetnys, Sword of Atagaris
Fosyf, the tea baron and her bitchy daughter Raughd
Presger translator Dlique
Awn's sister Basnaaid
Tea. Lots of tea.

I think you can safely forget the rest; after all, I did.

It's a quick, fun read. So is The Martian. Ancillary Justice, a little harder to get into at the beginning but the payoff is worth it. It's the kind of book that sticks with you.

Four isn't sad! No shame in taking time to read a book. I'm lucky if I finish one full sized novel in a year. I'm a very slow reader, just means I get more time with the story I also really like the idea of making bookmarks for each book, I might have to do something like that!

Actually, that number's gone up to six since I remembered two more books I'd read last year - I'll update this page when I finish their bookmarks. What is sad, though, is that I read more novels in the year 2014 than in my entire college career.

Yes. What a cool idea. I would like to try that. You don't mind, do you? Mine will be beginner-like but pretty fun.
1. Jack White's the Sktstone, 2. Sheeri Tepper's The Companions, 3. Heinlein's Stranger is a Strange Land   etc.

Of course not! I'd love to see what others can do with the books they read. Maybe it'll become a thing!

Maybe! What was the size of one of your bookmarks?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Malicious-Monkey In reply to LocationCreator [2015-01-05 00:19:39 +0000 UTC]

They're all different sizes, just scraps of bristol paper I wanted to use up. I could measure one but it'd have weird fractional dimensions. Is there a 'standard' bookmark size?

Probably not. I just wondered if there was, too.

What a cool idea!  I want to try this for the 2015 books I read.  It sounds like a great way to branch out and draw more.  Your bookmarks turned out gorgeous.

This is an amazing idea! I also read Rendezvous with Rama in 2014, what a great book. Btw, I'm the guy who used to make those alien dioramas a few years ago .

Malicious-Monkey In reply to DerekRestivo [2015-01-04 01:53:40 +0000 UTC]

Which ones? I looked through your gallery and didn't see any. Speaking of which, I'm half of mind to make a dio of that book, just so I can call it "Rendezvous with DioRama."

This is really sad, but I actually don't have the photos on this computer, and I deleted the dA account (I went under bulletcurtain). This is the closest I could find with a google search, this is the second diorama I made i.imgur.com/dxlfADQ.jpg?1 .

That's too bad. Were you the guy that made those colorful and somewhat abstract alienscapes out of spray foam and stuff? Those were badass.
