you have some nice pieces--don't really know how to help with your portraits, but I could offer some things on this
I think you could achieve a better sense of light and atmosphere if you consider your light sources--where is the light in the back coming from? It seems as if the only light is in the front... so the cave should probably be dark in the back and the highlights from the front. Ah, I'm so bad at explaining, but I hope this helps~

It's amazing! I love it! Whatever this piece lacks, it certainly makes up for in humour. I think you did a fantastic job with this painting. It's original, the colouring is great, and the expression on his face is priceless. A tip I'd suggest for future paintings is perhaps to add a little more lights and shadows. You have a cave with flames all around and the lighting looks a little bit flat. Other than that, fantastic work. I can't wait to look at your gallery!

Aww, the devil looks like an adorable little fellow who is a bit lonely^^
It's a really beautiful piece. Only one little thing for the future: there is no shadow needed on th fireplace in the foreground because the flames would light up everything around it^^
I hope it's clear what I mean.
Nevertheless, it's amazing!

Very nice, Grummel is definitely a fitting name for the little devil. The facial expressions convey the message well and the whole marshmallow thing was a creative idea.
The blurry background was good and kept the focus on the little devil, but I personally believe that sharpening the fire/volcano that grummel is making smores with would give a more even focus.
Great idea none the less, hard to find something wrong with it.

very well done! the tones and lighting are very much helping the piece telling the light-hearted story about the devil toasting his marshmellows
my only kind of, "critique" is (if you can call it a critique) there is not enough going on in the frame to me. there could be more little irrelevant details in it like pendants, or like bones, or... i dont know just little stuff that adds to the picture again, very lovely job

Two comments:
first, your focus point is almost exactly in the center of your composition. Cropping off most of the left side will almost completely resolve that.
Second, the figure's legs seem to be coming straight from his belly. Although he's chubby (very funny) he should still have a bit of a pelvic area (even if it appears to be overlapped by the belly).

this very cool and beautiful! I love your little devil ^^
For your feedback, I saw that the background isn't really definite and your devil is really clear. I think you should make the background more clean and really definite or the contrary, the devil should be more blurred. Also, your devil has a lineart and the background havn't any lineart. This is strange too.
But for the rest, it's really good! The colors are great and the light too! Nice work

oh well, the background is supposed to be more blurry than the devil
but i understand what you mean with the lineart! that might really be a little bit irritating.
thanx alot for your feedback, im glad you liked the piece!

For the coloring, I really don't have what to say, cause it looks totally awesome to me!
The devil is also increduble, his expression is precious. To me he looks lonely and sad. But he is getting desapointed cause everything in his life is going wrong, even mashmallows are troublesome, he can't get it right. That's why he has that sad and confused look, to me.
Keep up your nice work!

I have to say the colours, lighting and atmosphere are amazing! I had a good chuckle when I saw this! The only thing that is bugging me is that his tummy looks like a pillow at the moment. He doesn't seem to have a butt, I guess! But he is very cute, and I love the expression!

Dizqard [2009-11-07 23:27:20 +0000 UTC]
First off, that devil is adorable xD I especially love the premature goatee he has!
The mood/tone is shown well through liberal use of reds and oranges, but it's balanced out by the adorable little one and his 'action'. Makes it a delightfully strange piece.
You did the stalagmites/tites nicely, and that is surprising, considering this is an unlined piece. Whenever I attempt hard colors and I don't have lines to hide the blemishes, it ends up just terrible!
The only thing I can think that could improve is the far background. The fade to orange is fitting, but a bit plain. Add in a few twisting caverns, or even a few more layers of cave wall, and it'll be much better. The orange fade is nice, but just a bit too wide.
So yeah, the overall picture is just awesome. One of the better gimmefeedbacks that was in my inbox

malisaa In reply to Dizqard [2009-11-08 14:10:45 +0000 UTC]
thank you so much for the detailed feedback, i really enjoyed it!
for the stalagmites, i think it depends on which drawing style you feel most comfortable with and of course practise the best way is to try out as many styles as possible to get a feeling for that! dont be afraid of new things!
your ideas for improving the background are great! i will think of that when doing my next pieces. i need to do more interesting backgrounds
thanx again, im glad you liked it so much!

The devil looks wonderful! I love his expression. Even with his marshmallows it looks like he isn't enjoying hell very much.
The lighting looks wonderful. I like all the reds, orange, and black in the piece. You have a nice understanding of color. Your light sources illuminate the picture nicely. The atmosphere feels like he just crawled away to his own little corner of hell to whine and think.
The piece is just wonderful all way round. Good job!

I think the lighting is good but needs to be a bit more defined. Darker shadows on him where the flame doesn't cast light, but other than that, the glow is good.

yeah, now that you say it, there really should be another kind of shadows created by the flames. mmm! really must think of that when painting fire again, thanx for the advise!

First: Cute!!!! Aw, I love it!
Second: When I look to this little devil, I feel comfortable and warm, a nice contrast with the ambient. The atmosphere is great, with a very hellish theme, contrasting again with the little demon. And the colors match with the theme and with each other, creating a nice composition.

You have a feel for using the black color without ruining the drawing, so I would suggest you play around with brighter and darker colors for future works.
But don't get it wrong, this way of coloring is very pleasant to look at, and I really like it as well because of the softness nd textures(which you're also good at using).
Also..
Zomg, EVIL mashmallows!
