Description

UPDATE: I was just too caught up in everything else going on to be able to finish a second prize for this I'm sorry! T^T /cry

BUT! I have chosen a winner: Elephantfreak 's Bao Qu
Their entry wasn't one of the very long ones, but I feel it captures the essence of a what a spiritkin should be~ The way that it appears, the boon that it grants, and especially the strange behavior of not being able to travel vertically, all really appealed to me. It gave me that, "Huh.. that'd be really weird" feeling when trying to picture this creature in the world. Many of the entries were very extreme without giving me enough of that.. certain something.. and just giving the spiritkin some bombastic boons/curses xD Which isn't wrong, necessarily, but they're supposed to be a fey race, a race that defies common sense and logic and just gives you the willies when you interact with them... not just because they can be scary (which many are), but because you don't understand their thoughts and motives. They are alien to our realm, and should should feel alien.

A few other entries really made me happy and will be receiving "as time permits" semi-custom tokens as a high-five and thank you for making me smile.
Elix-e The Spinster entry was probably a super close second place. Honestly I was torn which one to choose. *o* I really loved the aesthetic and general feel for this entry, I definitely got that creepy vibe trying to picture it appearing outside of some random village, oh man! I think the effect of the magic thread was maybe too potent in the end, but I am so tempted to run a story around this spiritkin in the future! Very well done!
giz-art Holy crap that picture made me so giddy xD Pawndigs sound so adorable!! The only reason I didn't feel like this would be a good winner is that the pawndigs seem too traditionally sentient? They seem like they could be a normal race of creatures living in the world, and not something fey and mysterious. Still, the entry was well presented and the race itself gave me the "awwwwwww"s x3
CitrusBun Pretty much for the same reasons I listed for Giz, the Eolas gave me lots of good feels, but ended up sounding more like an actual normal race without the heeby-jeeby vibes of the spiritkin. I loved the art accompaniment and.. ok I admit I might have a huge soft spot for big libraries ><;;

I will note the four winners later on after I've finished a few errands, but that's all folks! Thank you everyone for entering, I really enjoyed reading through your entries!! <3

ADVENT CALENDAR DAY 9 -

~~Candlelight and Storytime~~

Yesterday, I posted a brief introduction to one of Eyre's important races, the Spiritkin (over here if you missed it! { ADVENT DAY 8 } ). So today I'm going to have a little contest centered around them!

Spiral, one of my NPCs, is collecting stories about the fey Spiritkin. There are so very many different types of spirits on Eyre, it's almost impossible to count. She wants you to tell her about a Spiritkin that you've heard about or encountered! With her is a very bed-headed little elnin that seems to be quite interested in the idea of storytime, and will likely follow you home if you tell them a good one.

CONTEST SPECIFICS:

* The purpose of this contest is to create and describe a type of Spiritkin.
* By submitting your ideas to the contest, you will be giving me permission to use the concept for future events/stories/etc within the Mana universe (even if you don't win). I will credit you for the concept if used.
* Spiritkin are creatures based on fairytale and legends. There are many Spiritkin on Eyre with analogues to our own myths (such as the Dullahan) but are typically different in some way. There are also, of course, types that are completely specific to Eyre (so you're welcome to get at creative as you like, they don't need to be based on any existing creature or myth).
* The Spiritkin are always bound by a set of rules (or jinxes as many people call them) that they cannot break and that determine the way they react to just about everything. These rules can be absolutely anything, from not being about to touch the color blue, or only being able to use their left hand to open doors, etc anything at all!
* The jinxes also apply to what happens when something upsets or pleases a Spiritkin. Like receiving a golden brick on your doorstep for giving an old treefolk a nice back scratch, or conversely getting your garden infested with poisonous frogs because you kicked a fey toadling off a hiking path.
* Spiritkin are generally a neutral race as long as you play by their rules.. but do not be fooled! They are terribly dangerous if you break a jinx or otherwise upset them in any way. A harmless little grey gremlin taking sugar from your kitchen should be ignored unless you want to wake up with needles in your ears.
* It is also important to note that Spiritkin are not bound by conventional physics or common sense. They can appear/disappear as their rules allow (one common jinx is the inability to vanish or teleport if you maintain eye contact with them). And just because you're carrying an easy and friendly conversation with a beautiful fey elf, it doesn't mean that at any moment she won't turn into some horrible vision of decay and drag you into an early grave for letting her see your uncovered wrists.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

* Create your own type of Spiritkin! Describe their appearance and where they like to live.
* Tell me about their jinxes, how do they act and what kinds of things they're known for.
* Very important: tell me about what kind of interactions make them angry or scared and which ones make them happy!
Examples: The Dullahan is a terrible creature that will always attack you if you see it.. Unless! You have gold on your person, it hates gold and will not go near it
House elves will clean your home at night, but only when you are sleeping. If you thank them for their hard work in any way (like leaving treats out for them), they will vanish and never reappear. It's best to ignore them.
* You can just give me the straight facts about the creature, or for bonus points you can tell me about them in a short story! (Please not too long, I have a short attention span xD)
* More bonus points if you draw/sketch the Spiritkin for me!
* Post your entries at my comment below so that I can keep track please!

------------------------------

Q & A! Will add any answers to questions and stuff here if they come up:

Q: Do Spiritkin have a specific appearance? Or do they just look like anything your mind can imagine?
A: Pretty much anything at all! I would encourage making them at least a little.. odd.. in some way. Like if your Spiritkin takes the shape of an animal, have some part of the body be unusually shaped/colored/etc to mark it as an unnatural creature.

Q: Can Spiritkin die? Do they kill each other?
A: Technically, it's possible. But it would have to be by some very special/dramatic methods. In most cases when a Spiritkin is rendered unconscious or otherwise defeated it is usually banished back to its home realm instead of being outright killed. And sure, Spiritkin could kill each other under the right circumstances/motivation. ^^

Q: Can we enter more than once?
A: I would prefer one entry per person (to keep things as tidy as possible),  but I will accept up to two.

Q: Do Spiritkin only come out in the winter?
A: They can show up at any time during the year, however it's much easier/more common for them to appear during winter.

Q: Can I still use the design after I submit it?
A: Of course!~ You're just giving me permission to use your ideas as a resource to populate my setting with unique creatures. If you want to use your idea in your own work, I have no issues with it. After all, Spiritkin come from a whole different dimension, so it's entirely possible for them to visit other places as well (which is why there are a lot of Spiritkin that are similar to myths from Earth!).

Q: What will you do with my entry exactly?
A: Like I mentioned above, I'm going to use these entries to inspire actual Spiritkin that will appear in the world. I will also compile the entries for other people to browse whenever they'd like to create or choose Spiritkin for their Manaverse pets to interact with (in roleplays etc). I may use part or all of your entry, or mash two entries together, who knows. I will likely make changes to things and mish mash ideas to create new creatures, so bear in mind that your original concept may not appear (canonically) as you originally wrote them.

CONTEST RULES:

End date: Entry must be received by Sunday, Dec 13@ 7PM PST
-- May extend if there's enough interest? --
The winner receives the candle elnin!

I'm assuming.. you saw it on a candle... lmao. I seriously just eyeballed the colors from an image of a burning candle o_O So if you saw this design somewhere else I'm not sure I'd be that surprised.

xD;; Ah.. well yes I suppose? It's not going to be hard to find adopts with general similarities, especially in cases when the adopts are following a specific theme (in this case it's not the exact same theme, but we both ended up with a general wispy/smokey/flame/thing ... which works for her spirit theme and my candles one).

I'm not sure where you're going with this though. ^^a

Eeeek hope I'm not too late! O uO Saw an old friend, and things took longer than expected.

Name: Will-o'-the-Wisp (Technical term: Willies, and no, they do not appreciate being called this)

Appearance: Miniature sprites, with their torch, approximately half the size of an average pomu. (I will try to draw one if I have the time.) But they typically have wispy hair, large eyes, small mouth, and ponchos on. They are constantly seen either clutching a 'torch' or in the flame of the 'torch' itself. This torch is actually part of them, and they are entirely lost without one, physically and metaphorically. Technically speaking, all genderless though some take on the appearance of a little boy or girl. Usually pure white and a mixture of light electric blue all over (including the torch/flame). But at rare ones are light orange/yellow, these are often seen as the older 'wiser' flames and are said to have great power.

They do glow dimly, and are semi-translucent.

Habitat: Dark forests, some meadows with high enough grass. Usually not seen anywhere above the typical eye-level, and always seen in a place where they can dart easily into hiding, so forests are their preferred choice.

Behavior:

-Mute. They communicate with each other by turning the 'flame' on their torch on and off. Like fireflies. With other creatures, the 'humanoid' part would also sometimes act out charades to help in the communication.

-Nocturnal. Their lights go out during the daytime and they have to slumber in the nearest nook and cranny that they can fit in.

-Travel in clans, usually anywhere from three to two dozen.

-They're a bit like jellyfish, so they actually get often carried by the wind. That's why you can't often see them on windy nights since they're being blown around and they're blinking their lights furiously and internally screaming. Sometimes, a tree will look like it's been decked out by Christmas lights, but it's actually will-o'-the-wisps clinging on for dear life.

-Tend to be extremely friendly to other creatures, whether this friendliness is wanted is another thing

-They hate rain, so they're often clustered in dark caves and scaring off bats when it's thundering outside.
-They are also extremely naive, and can be easily tricked to being caught.

Jinxes:

-They're trolls and they very much like leading the way. Unfortunately for the follower, the way is often not where they want to go. Will-o'-the-wisps could lead them anywhere like their favorite cave to hide out in during windy nights to where they think the best daisies can be found. So no, never ask them for directions. Overall, they do have good intentions.

-Very willful in trying to make you follow their way. Will continuously nudge you until you do. However, no matter how much they nudge, their nudging only feels like a light tap from something made of soft jelly. So no, not very threatening.

-Does not like actual flames, thinks their 'flame' is much better. When meeting a traveler, will do their very best to put the traveler's flame out.

-Are attracted to uncertainty because they are all about doing their very best to lead whoever is uncertain on their way

-Crying attracts more will-o'-the-wisps. So if you want get rid of them, crying is not going to solve it.

-Confidence will keep them at bay. They know that you won't follow their way if you are confident on your own.

-Usually appears before lone travelers

-Hates iron. Can't stand the site of it. Also not great with water. Their 'flame' won't get put out by water, but their luminescence will dim considerably and you can say good-bye to being able to travel alone safely in dark forests. (They will do their very best to lead dangerous beats on their 'way' towards you. They hold grudges months at a time. They would hold them longer, but not they don't have the best memory.)

-Will-o'-the-wisp catching can often seem like a game and a great way to get a near desk lamp, but don't do it. They often cannot survive long without a clan and will die of loneliness. Upon their death, they will also curse you, and you will have a glowing mark of a 'flame' branded on your forehead for all the will-o'-the-wisps to see. This brand will no fade until 100 requests from them are fulfilled.
-Do not call them willies, they will eat your babies. No actually.

I really hope this isn't too long waaah forgive me :,o I'm a terrible writer but I tried my best!!

------------------------------------------
"Well it was years ago, naturally like all tales. I lived in a walled town by the ocean known as Ferenley. Of course there were houses outside the town, and in one of those cozy driftwood houses lived the most innocent creature in the world. When I first met her she was but a small babe, fair with white hair and eyes like blue snow. She was my brother's kid, and I often played tea party with her when she was really small.

Her heart? Like gold. She believed in helping all living things, regardless of beauty. And that's how all the creatures had come to trust her... The Spiritkin I mean. She had come to know them and their tricks after her parents passed from illness.

Ah yes, her parents did die, when she was still a wee one. It started as a cough and before ya know it they were sleeping six feet under. his wife went first and then him, leaving their gentle child in this world without them. Not much that they could do about it but I knew they didn't wanna leave her. I took care of her from then on... Moved into her house cause it's not like I had a wife or kid anyway.
She became frail after that. rarely left the house. didn't eat much. poor thing. I provided for her from then on and tried to help with her pitiful demeanor, and she did start to get better as the years passed. Eventually found herself going to town by herself when she got well enough.

Life went on after that, you know? But it just wasn't the same for her. She felt lonely. Started seeking attention. Boy did she find it.
She was sixteen when she met that knight boy sent by the king to investigate the raised activity of Spiritkin in the area. She didn't know that though, thought he was payin real good attention to her cause he liked her. But I could see right through him. I told her not to trust him but then again love is blind. She went off to visit him all the time he was staying here... Not heeding my warning. As to my fears, it happened one night. She didn't come home so I went to investigate.

Now you might think I'm insane but I'm positive of what I saw that night.

I saw her with the boy, on the cliff... Talkin to him while he was off duty. Like they always did for their late night rendezvous. But something in the conversation turned sour. I couldn't hear what was said, but she slapped him in the face and as she turned to walk away he grabbed her and threw that poor innocent soul off the cliff. Such an evil thing to do to her, I knew he had planned on disposing of her sooner or later once he got the location of The cave's guardian. I was getting ready to push him off right after but before I could move, a mysterious light appeared, a ghostly figure floating before him. He was in awe naturally. Awe up until that ghost dragged him off the cliff. It wasn't quite a ghost... I mean it was translucent... But something had happened to my poor niece. Her features had changed... But I'm certain it was her. Garbed in pure white.

My best guess is that she got him back for tricking her, and even though I couldn't hear what was said I knew... He was using her to get to that one Spiritkin she met in the woods that one time. The one guarding the entrance to the cave of truth. And naturally I was broken up about what happened at the time, who wouldn't be? But I live knowing that she lives on in some form. Getting revenge for his trickery.

Since then, I've never seen one of those creatures again... But others have. They've said that they're born from broken souls that transform after they die based upon regrets. I'm sure she had many regrets...especially betraying the guardian Spiritkin. So it makes sense some how.

And I thank you for listening to my tale, not many people believe me or care to listen further. But I'm glad you stuck through it, even though it may sound like an old man's ramblings."

Name: Sylvtheer (combination of the words "Sylph" ,"Mother" and "Eel")  Can also be known as "Lady mist", "Lake white", "Lake mother", etc. Using this name is considered very bad luck and may cause a future curse upon you and your family. (this however is not true)

Appearance:   This is the most common appearance that has been documented, and is commonly found in books depicting rare and ledgendary spiritkin. Most of the language in those books is cryptic, but we can see what it commonly appears as
Few sightings have ever been documented.
eevaxiladopts.deviantart.com/a…

Sylvs  can take on two forms depending on the circumstances of encounter. The first form is that of an angelic like figure, usually with flowing locks of hair. This form always has a white complexion and soft dapple spots all over it's body. The eyes are black, both pupil and sclera. This form changes depending on what species and gender encounters them. Using their powers (to be explained later) they take the form that is most attractive to the beholder.

Their second and true form is that of an inky colored eel monster.  Coated in a phantasmagoric inky cloud, the features of this form are contorted versions of their first forms, spotted yet with frosted fins and an offensive look with black sclera, yellow irises, yellowed teeth and a gaping mouth.
they take this form almost always after showing their initial form.

Habitat: Sylvs always live in natural water, never man made lakes or overly small bodies of water (like puddles) they like to stretch their fins so big lakes are usually the best habitat for them. Since they're neither warm blooded or cold blooded any temperature of natural water will do.

Jinxes:

They can never attack a pure hearted person. They can't even harm a hair on their head, this is a general understanding that they can't. They do however find ways around this jinx, like if you are to get into the water with them it's assumed that you'd like to be carted away to a different realm.

They cannot show their true form to a pure hearted person, for it is deemed impure of them to.

only impure people can see their true form. They may be able to see through a Sylv's illusion.

If the true form is seen by someone they try to drag that person into the water. It's not known what they do with those they drag under because not even bubbles are seen.

If the water in which they live is drained, the Sylv will disappear.

They cannot curse Pure hearted people. This is a rule that all Sylvs must follow.

It's best for impure hearted people to stay away from Sylvs, however they can best A Sylv, if they were to
Declare a battle of wit, or skill. The Sylv can not deny an impure hearted person this battle. Otherwise the Sylv cannot attack the person who proposed the battle.

If bested in a battle of wit or skill, the Sylv must allow the impure hearted person go unharmed. However if the impure individual loses the battle, they're taken away to another realm.

They can only be slain with a sword made of a certain type of black polished meteorite metal. As a result of that all Sylvs fear meteorite metals, and will flee into a different realm if they sense any on your person.

They only make deals to their benefit. And are good with words, so it's rare that someone can trick them

Its best not to show any fear, fear is seen as a flaw in your heart and they may drag you off because of it.

It is said that you can in fact be blessed by a Sylvtheer, blessings are only passed to those who are deemed worthy by the Sylv themselves. These blessings are very rare and no one seems to have any record on someone who has been blessed. Blessings are imagined to be supernatural powers, or even imbuing the beholder with their own life force and essence. If you please a Slyvtheer by completing a task in their favor, a blessing is usually given. But then again this is for pure hearted individuals only

Space rocks/dust will burn their skin, just as holy water burns a demon.
It's about the only thing they're scared of. Nothing else is able to land a blow or strike them since they're more of an illusion. Even iron does not phase them as it does normal Spiritkin.

You can usually carry special astral charms to ward them off, it doesn't always work but it does have a 50/50 chance of working depending on what Sylv you can encounter. But it's not like you'd encounter them regularly since they're so elusive.

Behavior:

Sylvs are masters at wordplay and general games is skill such as board games or games that require aiming. (Darts, arrows etc) they will always take the first turn in battles.

Generally they test the strength and purity of a soul, the purity of your soul is not judged by what acts you've done but the contents of your heart. They can usually tell the corrupt from the pure, and try to attack corrupted hearts.
If a corrupted individual were to run away the Sylv will place a curse upon them and their families. Their curses last generations and are almost impossible to break.

Certain Sylvs behave as gatekeepers for waterways into magical and pure areas or places where special items like mystic swords may be found. Though they themselves are impure, they're still very good protection for those waterways

Typically Sylvs will only appear if an impure individual comes close to their territory.

In any case their over all behavior is a mystery, they spend most of their time unseen and find ways around spirit world gate guardians often. Dragging "prey" off to unknown places or far away places.

It's also said that Sylvs can take on various forms that their beholder finds attractive using their psychic powers, as well as producing vivid and convincing illusions.

More About:

Sylvs are thought to be Souls that could not move on from the place they died. The natural energy involved with the waterway and an unknown force was thought to have cleaved the souls, reforming them into horrid monsters based upon their regrets and vices. Once reformed it's said they retain no individuality from when they were a soul, except for small differences in appearance or coloring.
They have no gender and are neither dead nor alive, but stuck in some sort of Limbo because they were unable to relinquish their hold on the real world. They do not eat and they do not sleep, yet they're imprisoned forever, chained to the place it's thought that they originally died.

In all reality, Sylvs Are exactly cleaved and reformed souls, however they do not remain in the same place. They drift between realms, the place of their origin being their "home" realm. It's not known how they really originate, but there are theories.

They can not reproduce, and do not form very deep bonds with one another. They can also live eternally if not killed by a sword forged of meteorite metal.

Their powers include mind reading, and illusion powers as well as telepathy and telekinesis.
They have no real physical matter, since they're ghost like spiritkin.

They can appear at whim in winter time during full moons, when the gates are at their weakest.

Unlike most Spiritkin, Sylvs also cast very powerful miasma spells to shield and protect against those who would do evil to them or the place that they protect. Meaning that only the bravest may dare to encounter them on quests to seek certain items.
They are very dangerous, and should be approached with caution.
It's not known if Slivs have more powers than those described, but it's highly likely that they could. Only Experienced adventurers should handle these creatures.

Not much is known as to why Sylvs exist, or what ties some of them to become guardians of waterways, or why they specifically only reside in natural water. It's rumored that "natural energy" and "miasmas" have something to do with it, but for now most of it is undocumented.

Encounters are few, since Sylvs are one of the rarer spirit beings, and have yet to be studied in detail, so there's not much to go off of other than rumors, tales, and witnesses to their powers and appearances.

Though most of this information is disclosed to you, I imagine that much of this wouldn't be written in world. Sylvs would be a very big mystery to a lot of people and sightings would be very rare. This Spiritkin is very "shy" and a little bit more malicious than first thought to be.

Name :

Eolas (which means "Knowledge" in Irish)

General Info :

They are known for the knowledge they have. In some places, they are even worshipped as the deity of knowledge. They love high places, It enables them to see the surrounding more efficiently. This is why they are almost hard to find since they almost only reside in high places like mountain and such. Since the high mountains usually is snowy throughout the whole year, they mostly have thick feathers to keep them warm. Most people believe that they are wise and mature, which is not really true. Even though some of them really is wise and mature, some of them actually does not necessarily care about the people. What they care about is the knowledge that people have. They love knowledge. There are some way to be able to ask them for some deeds which are having a knowledge they don't already know (which is a rare case since they know almost everything) or being able to pass their riddles when they test you. They live in small groups, spread through mountains, but it is said that once every year, they will gather in their main hideout, exchanging knowledge that they've accumulated throughout the year and documenting them in a super huge library. There are people that said that some "worthy" people actually have been visiting that place, but most people are still searching for this library but its whereabouts is still unknown to most people.

They usually spend their free time chilling in the tree trunks, reviewing their knowledge which is stored in their magical books which floats and appears whenever they need it (though they rarely put it away so they're usually seen with their books). Since their magical book would be really really thick if all the knowledge they know are stored inside, some part of the knowledge are being put in some magical items that usually floats and surrounds their body. These items could be anything from stone, crystals, or even papers (in the picture, it is crystals). In our modern world, these items almost functions like "usb flash disk" for their knowledge, and the book is more like the "laptop" to view the knowledge stored in these magical items.

Appearance
:

They mostly shaped like varieties of owls. They usually wear feathers behind their head. These feathers are actually an indicator for their status in their society. The more the feathers are, the higher the status is. Most of these Eolas usually wears one feather to show that they have "grown to an adult". Two or three of them is regarded as higher in their status, more like leaders or someone to be respected.

Behavior :

They actually live for a really long time, this enables them to accumulate a vast amount of knowledge. They usually are peaceful creature unless threatened. They like to hang in a high places deep in the forest or clump of trees. They kinda have some kind of "intuition" about the amount of knowledge one has, so if you are some kind of scholar which has a lot of accumulated knowledge, it's not impossible that you might encounter one of them approaching you.

Their unique traits :

They love knowledge. Sometimes they might even use dirty ways to obtain them. A library which is qualified enough to be visited by them can be a sign of the quality of the books inside that library.

Jinxes :

Upon encountering them, to be able to receive their aid or assitance, you have to be tested by them first. They will give you several questions, It could be riddles or more questions depending on your knowledge specialty. If you pass, they will give you their aid, but If you failed you'd be ignored and they'd be gone the next time you blink your eyes.

Actually, people who actually able to give contribution by telling them the knowledge they don't already know in their accumulated society knowledge will be given a special privilege to visit the Great Library once. Once they leave the Great Library, they'd have to contribute another new knowledge they don't already know. That's why some privileged people actually stays there and refuses to come out from the library and chose to live there the rest of their live.

I've encountered a Spirtkin, that is in fact, one of the most annoying creatures I've encountered in my life. You've probably encountered it too. Never met a spirtkin? I can guarantee you have, you just didn't know it.

Have you ever felt bugs crawling all over you, even though there really is nothing there? Or maybe you've heard an exceptionally loud fly buzzing around, but just can't seem to pinpoint where it's hiding? How about something we most likely all have done at one point or another, get shocked by, "static electricity.” No, no, it’s not really what happens when an electron has too much positive charge and another a negative charge.

The one responsible for all these irritations is the Zapoof.

sta.sh/022wx6xh9h50

The Zapoof is a small, extremely poofy creature that is no bigger than a housefly. Now, the Zapoof does not really look exactly like my spectacular artist rendering, you see, this is how it would look without all the electrical charge it carries with it. (beware!) With the electrical charge, it becomes so poofy, that all that you would be able to see are the antenna and wings stinking out of the fluffy fur-tail mess.

While extremely annoying, it does have a very logical reason as to why it causes you such distress. It is a very interesting creature, and if frightened badly, one of two things will happen: It will give out a large electrical surge, causing you to feel a shock, or it will start to fade away, as if it was becoming a ghost. During this ghost stage, you can pass your finger completely through it, and it’s electricity is gone as well. However, you must remember, it can pass back and forth between this stage and a physical form, thus, it is also the reason you may feel bugs crawling all over you, only to find nothing was there.

They get very cold easily, in fact, they feed off of a living things body heat, they need it to live, and without it, they would certainly die. So when you feel that invisible bug crawling over you, try not to swat it away, because it is just the Zapoof’s six half ghost legs. Not to mention, this upsets them greatly, and most likely you will get on their bad side.

Very rarely will it shock you out of fear, mostly it will shock you out of spite. They are not very clever creature, and in fact, are quite stupid. If you do swat them away when they are feeding off of your body heat, they will stalk you, (for a ridiculous amount of time, I might add) until it has been so long, you most likely have forgotten about the whole ordeal. But they have not forgotten, no, they will stalk you for days, even weeks on end, until the time is right, (I have yet to figure out their silly method of determining, “the right time,”) and then ZAP! They will shock you when you are least expecting it.

There is a good side to them, for example, if you let one come feed off your heat many times, it becomes accustomed to you, and it fact, protective of you. Being a creature of small intelligence, it is rather paranoid, and will ward off many other real bugs that come your way, as it believes they are coming too, to feed off of your body heat. It can ward off about half of the vicious, heat sucking bugs that come your way, the other half, it misses, or, ran out of electricity, since while they usually have electricity to spare, it is not meant to be used to zap other creatures, not to mention ones that are the same size or bigger than it, and it tires them quickly, so they need time to rest. This is why you only get shocked every once in a great while, it takes all of their energy and effort just to give you a little zap.

They cannot make any other noise than a buzzing sound, and it does not come from their wings, that’s how they communicate with fellow Zapoofs, through buzzes, but are very chatty creatures, and talk to themselves when they are alone, so this is perhaps the reason that you cannot find that obnoxiously loud fly in your room.

Most likely, you will never see a Zapoof. In fact, I have only seen one in my entire life, and it is the same one, that comes back every so often day to feed off of my body heat. While it may be very annoying to feel as if there are bugs crawling over you, or be shocked, or hear that loud fly in your room, that is just the way of the Zapoof.

Name: Mortis Tempesta (roughly means Storm of the Dead, A Storm that Died)
Alias: Mortese (plural), Peddlers of the Underworld
Appearance: Somewhat small, base of the body resembles a fox, but the extra-long tail resembles more of a long-haired dog tail. However, fish scales cover the back and tale, as well as other patches all over the body. Long-haired fur and is always dripping wet. Colors vary. Researchers speculate that brighter colors (much like a tropical fish) indicate positive emotions/auspicious events and darker, desaturated colors would be the opposite. Often covered in seaweed, barnacles, etc. Eyes are usually covered by long fur or seaweed, but also glimmer like untouched jewels buried at the bottom of the ocean.
Location: Large bodies of water. Usually oceans or seas, but occasionally rivers. Never lakes or ponds.
Lore: Said to be servants of a goddess that guards the oceans and seas, as well as death (especially of those who drowned at sea). Their goddess remains in the depths of her water underworld while the Mortese go around collecting souls of the deceased. They are the only ones who can freely travel between the lands of Life and Death as well as in between. They are said to be made by the goddess herself, using the souls of those who have already died.

Jinx: -It is common to make offers to the Mortese before going on a journey by water. Common offerings are food and jewelry, especially made from seashells. It is said that skipping the offering will incur the Mortese' wrath and sink the boat so they may collect the souls to drag to the underworld.
-Mortese loathe uninvited physical contact. Such contact will result in the Mortese sending out poison from beneath their fish scales and the victim will perish within days without proper treatment.
-Seeing a dark colored Mortese indicates imminent death
Neutral: -Mortese almost always remain in the water. The only time they come onto 'land' is when they are invited onto a boat. Even then the time is brief, because usually the Mortese is in a good mood and is invited onto the boat in order to save the passengers from drowning.
-Large or special offerings may be made to the Mortese in order to make a deal with "Death" in order to prolong life or exchange one's life for another
Blessing: -Mortese are fond of children because they believe the young should live long lives. Those who have a positive encounter with a Mortese during childhood will find themselves blessed with safe aquatic journeys for the rest of their lives.
-Mortese may occasionally leave behind a few of their scales to those they favor. These scales are incredibly hard and their changing colors can dictate the general weather
-Seeing a light colored/colorful Mortese indicates a long life
-The tears of a Mortese may bring the dead back to life
