You are an awesome artist! I'm glad that Foo mentioned you; I really like your art style.
Man, that fourth panel really makes a body appreciate the talents of a good colorist; not to make less of your and the inker's skills, of course.

Thats badass, I love the composition and even the initial sketch. The penciled page rocks, I love seeing raw, penciled pages and your sketches have lots of energy. Still a big fan of your work and I cant wait for you to post your Iron and the Maiden work.

I am really not into the cartoony look of comic characters, but you seem to do a good job doing your homework... great work

OK, a few questions if you have time, or anyone, please...

To start I've been outta buying comics and the scene for a long time, and I never read many DC book, so excuse my lame-ness.

1) Do you only do cover work? Are there posistions out there for only cover art in the comic industry, like a leap board before the company gives you pages to do?

2) Above, shot 2 and 3, shot 2 drafted with what kinda pencil to allow shot 3 to detail pencil and erase the old without erasing the final draft? (Again, I would've loved to goto Joe Kubert's school, but I didn't, so another question that might be super lame.)

3) Inks : I know someone else did em, but does the Inker get a little freedom when doing the inks?

4) Colors : Do you collab with the color and inker people to obtain the right feel?

5) How long would you say it took to finish your pencil work?

Sorry again for the lame ass beginners questions, outta the comic loop for a while, and just recently jumped back in the saddle to try and reach that life long dream that you get to do on a daily basis. I never got the comic book education, just did my own thing, but anything to help out us struggling artists would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for posting your work for us to see the processes, I think that's fabulous!

A new fan,
-Sean

hey sean:

1. I do the interiors of this title as well. While there are some that start out as cover artist's thats kinda rare. Usually you do interiors first, the usual practice is that the interior artist does the cover of the book as well but on occasion the editor might bring in a bigger named artist to do a cover. So more often then not its interior then cover.'

2. I didn't go to school either pretty much entered the work force after highschool. I use an hb lead and I use a .05 mechanical pencil which you can get at any supply store. as well as a 2mm lead holder. I use a gummy eraser which erases just enough but also leaves just enough to work off the roughs.

3. Um..well I pencil pretty tight so I prefer they follow what I do.

4. yes we talk it over

5. depends some take 4 hrs some take 14 hrs. this piece I believe was basically a days work ie. 8hrs.

and no problem. I pretty much was self taught just bought a lotta books on art and figure drawings etc. back then I didn't have the benifit of the internet and sites like these so it's great that a place like this exist today and I'm happy to impart what little knowledge I have

You rock buddy! HB lead huh, yea I never got into the whole "H" pencils, and kick myself in the butt thinking I should have...

Let me tell you how refreshing it is to hear that a self taught artist is working the main stream, kinda gives me a lot of hope for the future. (Laughs) When I was in high school, our digital art program was Windows Paintbrush back in 95ish... so yeah, when I found DA, I jumped right back into drawing regularly.

Did you work the indy scene, or apply right for DC? (Thinks about how awesome you must have been outta highschool!)

Anyhow, mate, wow, you have filled my hopes to the brim and given me a fresh look on optimism, thank you so very much!

Think I may just start reading comics again, 'specially LOSH

Thanks again for the few minutes of your time, you really make an impact on artists, young and in my case, old (29). Thank you.

Hey Sean,

Sounds like we graduated Highschool around the same time. Actually after HS I got a regular job 9-5er school was too expensive. I gave myself a couple years to try and break in and if I didn't I'd go to school. I basically just went to a lotta cons showing my art to editors and publishers since I was 16 pretty much every year. During this time I met a few aspiring creators as well so I've done my share of indy books just to get published. Through those books and doing the con scene I got a contract at top cow when I was around 19-20. It's kinda a blur now. Which basically lead me to DC this past year. So yeah dude definitely don't give up hope, its basically just about busting ass and knocking on doors. best of luck.

Ah to see how two paths go two different ways...

I'm pretty much knocking on indy doors just trying to get published, other than self, but I know I have miles to go before I can even get into the scene, need to work on those buildings, cars, etc... But talk about making my afternoon, YOU, wow, unexpected to get one let alone two replies, I'm sure I've mentioned how much you rock, right? Anyhow, your work is very inspiring, (been looking at it a lot today, studying, learning) and the helpful hints, well, it just completes the motivational boost, ya know?

Let me just say that you have been most helpful, and are a true credit to artsits in the main stream. Obviously everyone below publishing wants and needs the help to get up in the biz, that little smile from above telling us to keep working hard is what moves us up, what pushes us on. You are that smile I needed buddy, wow, thank you so much!
