Well, this tutorial was of a great help. Thanks!
I was about to ask if you had a tip about saving the toolboxes so you don't have to press SHIFT+CTRL+FL,F,W everytime, but I found it.
Just have set up the toolboxes, then save a blank svg file as default.svg in Inkscape\share\templates\

[link] is the manual.

The swatch dialog is pretty much the same as a palette is in most programs. For this tutorial, the palette needs to be set to "Auto," which you can select from a list by clicking the little left-pointing triangle seen just above the scroll bar in the second image. If you follow my palette tutorial video, you can also create and install custom palettes.

I have an old tool called Freehand MX and the method is exactly the same, vector graphics don't vary much.

Yeah, it's mostly just interface differences.

Hey Mandydax, thanks for making this tutorial but i have a problem...
i'm getting stuck with coloring the inside of the mane and i can't do these settings wich been showing in the tutorial...

mandydax In reply to lauani [2012-09-24 19:50:56 +0000 UTC]

I probably should have shown where the tool settings bar is. It's at the top, the row below the icons. It changes based on the tool you're using. When you have the bucket fill tool selected, it will have Fill by, Threshhold, Grow/shrink by, Close gaps, and a brush icon. I hope that fixes the problem for you. If not, I need more specifics on it.

I can't deal with the layers...
I create one called background like you explain, then another one for the mane outline, when i click on the eye to hide the background nothing happens

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mandydax In reply to ChloeDahlia [2012-09-22 06:47:09 +0000 UTC]

Did you put anything in the background layer? Sometimes if you don't have a layer selected, it will put objects in layer 'root' which isn't in the layer list. If that happens, you have to select those objects and cut (Ctrl+X) them, then select the layer they should be in and paste in place (Ctrl+Alt+V). It's one of my biggest gripes about Inkscape.

hey MandyDax, for a while I have been trying to use Inkscape to vector some ponies, but every time I do I always get stuck at the parts where there are more pointed/ slimmer lines at the ends of the strokes (such as the ear, muzzle, ect.) How exactly do you make the nice smooth line? Every time I do the line gets to be too thin before it makes the proper point. Any info will help

Here's an example of my problem- [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mandydax In reply to ArtisticDoe [2012-09-17 04:02:06 +0000 UTC]

You'll need to add a node on either side where you want the taper to start. For an example, download the SVG of any of my pony vectors. Open it in Inkscape and use the Node Tool to look at a tapered bit like that. If you have a path selected with the Node tool and hit Ctrl+A, it will select all nodes and let you see the handles as well. Generally, I have a cusp (diamond) node at the point, and a smooth (square) node on either side where the taper should start. I find it easier to adjust the handles on each node than to try dragging the line around.

This tutorial helped me a lot, but I haven't finished yet...How do I save it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mandydax In reply to Miss-Sweetpaw [2012-09-03 22:33:18 +0000 UTC]

Ctrl+S brings up the save dialog. This is for saving it as a Scalable Vector Graphics (.SVG) file. Always save this version so you can edit it later. If you want a bitmap version of the image (.PNG), then use Shift+Ctrl+E to export it in that format.

Hello there!

First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CREATING THIS TUTORIAL! (My apologies for the Caps Lock, haha)
This tutorial has been so useful to me! Because of you & your tutorial I was able to create my first ever digital art & first ever pony. Once again, thank you.

You, my dear friend, are a genius.

Here's a link to my pony, if you'd ever like to check it out.

By "picking" I mean clicking on the color in the image that you want. You can either just click or click and drag (which makes a circle, and the tool takes the average color of that area).

This is one useful wall of text. I've nearly completed a Rainbow Dash vector, and I'm so satisfied with it, that I'm gonna use Inkscape for all my future pony art! I thank you.

One thing, though- is there any way to tilt an ellipse? I can't figure out how for the life of me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mandydax In reply to Mickey-the-Luxray [2012-08-21 05:49:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, use the Select tool (F1) and click on the ellipse selected. This switches between grow/shrink mode and rotate/skew mode. Then just use the arrows around the edge to adjust it.

You need to set the fill to none. Just click on the red X in the palette to do that.
