Description
Previous NextThis was very frustrating to figure out (the draft has been sitting on my canvas for a hot second) but ultimately I liked how this turned out!! A funky angle for the whole scene :> The only thing I would've wanted to work more on is the lighting but that's already too much time spent on this piece 0v0💦 Writing part's long this time, thanks to my rp partners Unbinded and Fruit-tea3! I adapted the original rp into this story from Cecily's own pov.
Additional note for mods! The original rp script was submitted to the group, and since there are modifications here and there, I'm okay with just counting the initial ~346 words from the beginning to "a familiar sight"?

Cecily
Cecily was sure that under different circumstances, she would have loved to be here. She couldn’t remember the last time she had stepped foot into such a beautiful place. Well-dressed pokemon stood at the entrance as they greeted them on the way in and crystalline chandeliers decorated the ceilings. A feast was laid out in the ballroom but what really caught her eye were the outfits! She eyed each one appreciatively, the masterful use of colors and silks wrapped together harmoniously.
She touched the fringe of her own outfit unconsciously, and at the same time, she felt someone bump into her back.
“Watch it!” the other pokemon sneered. He shoved past, making sure that she was made aware that she had stood in his way. The brief encounter snapped her back to reality.
That’s right. She didn’t belong here.
She slunk under one of the tables, partly to gather her thoughts and partly to avoid getting stepped on. The tablecloths were long and thick, effectively blocking out most of the light source. It was just enough so that she could see her claws in front of her face, so that was good. The relative peace let her clear her mind and decide on what to do next.
According to Arin, the mansion had three floors. The party was on the first while the documents were on the inaccessible second and third floors. She’d emphasized the main places to hit were the master bedroom or office areas, but that they would have to do some searching themselves. In principle, simple enough, seeing as she was a ghost. Stealth was in her typing. Although…it would’ve been nice to not go alone.
Right on cue, the fabric of the tablecloth rustled and she tensed up, wary of the unexpected development. Did someone see her come in here? Was she suspicious enough to warrant following? She remained quiet as she began to plan for excuses to get herself out of the potentially awkward situation.
She was greeted with the sight of gleaming purple eyes and red whiskers, a familiar sight.
“Nice party, don’tcha think…?” Rai said, taking a seat next to her.
She gave a small laugh, relieved to see it was just her teammate. “I’m afraid I’m not really cut out for parties. I think I had more fun shopping for outfits and preparing than actually being here.”
“Well, you do look stunning tonight.” he said, taking a sip from his drink.
She giggled, returning his compliment. “You look quite dashing yourself.”
This was actually a bright spot of the masquerade, seeing everyone in radically different styles than they usually wore. Some went to great lengths to disguise themselves like Basil and Lester who wore full outfits while others took a more straightforward approach like Rai. It was a nice change of pace, she supposed.
Remembering what she was just thinking about before Rai showed up, she extended her invitation.
“I’m glad I, erm, you ran into me actually. Would you like to go exploring the mansion together?” she said, subtly hinting at their objective. Not that she thought there was anyone close enough to overhear, but it was better to be safe than sorry.
He smiled, a rare sight but a pleasant one nonetheless. “Perhaps. We might need to find a less crowded place for that though,” he replied, matching her soft tone.
“I agree. We could go towards the bathrooms and head towards…” she paused again, trying to remember where the stairs were. “The coat rooms? The staircases leading upstairs should be there.”
“Great idea. We have to split up though, since, well…” he gestured to her, then to himself. She nodded quickly, understanding what went unsaid.
“Then let’s meet up on the second floor,” she concluded. And with that, they went their separate ways. And unknown to either of them, the short interaction had been picked up by one curious individual who decided to take things into their own hands.
—----------
Cecily went towards the women’s coat room... only to see that a line had formed going into it. Why in the world there would be a line at this hour while the masquerade was still ongoing was beyond her. She got into line, eyeing the line of tape right next to the entrance of the coat room that was blocking the staircase from public access. She would need to time this right if she didn’t want to look suspicious.
Following the others into the coat room, she pretended to look through the clothing, sorting through the coats as if she were looking for her own. It was times like these where being small was convenient, as she wandered into the clothes...and through the wall, popping out at the staircase on the other side.
Going up the stairs, she suddenly felt a shiver. What was that?
When nothing jumped out at her, she warily moved forward. There were warnings of potential ghost sightings within the mansion walls and even though she was also a ghost, she didn’t want to run into them if she could help it.
“Now what’s the plan?” a voice came from beside her. She flinched but hastily muted her reaction.
“A-” she cleared her voice, and spoke again. “Arin said we should go to the bedroom or study. Maybe we could head to the study?”
“Sounds great,” he said, voice tinged with reluctance.
Before she had time to ask about that, something appeared before them, phasing through the floor. They also wore a masquerade’s costume but under it, a pikachu themed disguise.
Cecily blinked at the other’s appearance, then blinked again. Blank eyes stared back. Another Mimikyu, here. But were they friend or foe? She spared a quick glance at Rai, then back towards their unexpected guest.
“Hello,” she began slowly, guarded. “Can we…help you?”
She could also feel Rai tense up beside her. The other pokemon didn’t say anything for a beat, but then-
“Die.”
They extended their arms, taking on a battle stance.
Die? That felt excessive. She wondered if there was someone they could talk themselves out of this situation, but sparing a quick glance towards Rai indicated his opinion on the matter. He was on the defensive.
“Maybe try something more threatening than a single word. Also I’d like to stay and dance but we got something to do.”
With that, Rai spat out a Flamethrower, causing smoke to spread through the hallway. The flames were quick to vanish, but using the smoke as cover, she felt herself being picked up as he dashed in the opposite direction.
A blast of heat came from behind, approaching too quickly for her liking. As Rai ran through the hallways with her in tow, she grabbed one of the mansion room entrances and pulled them both inside. The copied fire attack had come too close for comfort.
“Alright, new plan. Should we split up, finish what we came here for and meet up later? They’re only one mon…” she thought out loud, leaving her suggestion open as their precious time slipped away.
“I’d agree, but they don’t seem to be the type to give up attacking strangers. Could potentially cause a commotion if they stay on our tails so we have to knock them out quietly-”
The two were once again interrupted as the stranger appeared again, aiming for Rai. Reacting on instinct, she slashed at them with a claw, sending them flying across the bedroom. Just as quickly, she drew back with a grimace. Should she be fighting back?
Rai seemed to be okay, recovering quickly from his mild daze. "Another idea, I beat this guy up while you continue with our objective." He stated, beginning to heat up. "Unless you want to join me?"
Their assailant didn’t stay down for long. Once again taking a page from Rai’s book, they spat flames at the floor and shrouded the room in smoke. With their hazy cover, they flew at her, eyes flashing at her underneath their disguise. She shook it off and jumped out of the way of their follow-up attack.
To Rai, she added, “Don’t look under their disguise!”
"Got it!"
He moved a few inches away from their opponent and charged up another Flamethrower. His eyes shrunk into slits as the flare swirled in his mouth. The flurry of flames was countered by a blast of water, canceling each other out as another hiss of smoke filling the air.
A water move too? She glared at the other Mimikyu, gears turning in her mind as she recalled how they manifested from the shadows earlier. The move clicked, temporarily added to her moveset. She dipped into Rai’s shadow, biding her time for an opportunity to strike.
"Tch. You're lucky I can't burn this place down with everyone else in it, otherwise I would've scorched a bigger fire."
He nodded at her and turned back to their opponent, snarling.
“Do you know what cat eyes can do?” he said, blowing away the light sources and plunging the room into pitch black darkness. He started to move, weaving around the obstacles of shelves and tables around the room.
“The battlefield is yours, Cecily!”
In theory, the plan was clever and should have been to their advantage. Unfortunately, she knew that they were just as blind as one another. After they had gone around the room several times in silence, it was clear that they had caught on and were mimicking their strategy of hiding away,
“I’m not sure where they are,” she admitted, hopeful soft enough that their enemy wouldn’t hear but enough for Rai’s more sensitive ears to pick up. “What should we do now?”
Instead of responding, he started moving again, this time heading out of the room with Cecily still in his shadow. It left their back open as their foe struck quickly, causing Rai to slide forward from the impact.
From the shadows, Cecily narrowed her eyes at them, claws digging into her palm. With the Mimikyu standing in the open, she extended her shadow behind them with Shadow Sneak and swung herself forward with a Shadow Claw-
-only to flinch, canceling most of the attack before it made contact. The momentum of her swinging claw still served to push them forward, right into Rai’s fire fang. The enemy countered by spraying another bout of water in his face and repelling the attack. Not giving them another opportunity to breathe, they exploded into a cloud of mist, knocking down the visibility down to almost nothing.
Her attack had disconnected her from Rai’s shadow but that didn’t stop her from vanishing back into the cover of the shade. She paused to catch her breath, shaking in her place.
She didn’t want to stay here.
She had to find a place, somewhere quiet to recuperate. Rai could take care of himself, right now she’d only be a liability going forward.
