Description The hair didn't have as much highlights as I would have liked, but this was really an exercise in skin tones in Poser. SSS is not easy to work with, and lighting is everything to get it right. No postwork other than signature

That face is superb.
And your hair is a cut above,
even though it seems to be the same basic technology
that most DAZ- and Poser- users use: textured sheets.

How come yours is so much better??

Despite all the advances made in depicting realistic female models, hair continues to be a major downfall. A lot of hair creators love to make built in hair highlights which really look like crap under any lighting condition. So I create all new texture/bump/specular maps for the hair. As for getting the hair to 'flow' like it should, the creators make hundreds of ways to make the hair flow via the morph controls, yet always based on the model standing upright and looking right at the camera.Turn the head even slightly and the hair model is 'poking' through the model. So I use either the morph brushes of Poser, or if it needs a lot of help, export it into Zbrush to reshape the hair. (I have no idea of how to create anything in ZBrush, but I can use the 'Move' brush) The downfall of all this work is that typically the modified hair can only be used in this pose under these lighting conditions so I have to rework it in every image I create.

Thanks for the comment! Much appreciated.

Have you ever tried hair based on strands?

Like the “Look at my Hair” plugin for DAZ Studio,
or Blender’s extensive toolset,
being improved now in order to show long curly wool?

I do use strand hair in Poser, but only for fur. I used it for animation once, and it did a good job, provided you like only one style of hair. Once you try to style the hair, it really becomes unmanageable and unrealistic. I don't use Daz Studio (and I've tried, while attempting to convert my V4 based Dryad character to a Gen figure. Got frustrated far too easily. Really don't like the program at all) and I've never used Blender, don't know the first thing about it. If I could paint worth a damn I would photoshop all hair.

There are people here who accomplish highly detailed artwork (e.g. cityscapes) in Photoshop,
but 3D, even if it’s a lot more troublesome for building a scene, has the terrific advantage that,
once you have the model —the pieces— you can move them any which way!

Blender has been much maligned for its interface, but that,
went through some serious consultation and rework back in versions 2.49 to 2.50;
we are now at 2.74, and I can highly recommend it.
Their current Open Movie project is largely a push in the direction of improving Blender hair.
Example 1 ; example2 .

The learning curve is steep (there’s no denying that),
but at least you do get a lot of documentation these days, official and otherwise.

Animation? Also an extra layer of trouble, but when it comes to long hair,
the human visual system becomes less exacting of realistic detail
as soon as there is movement involved.

Example:

...If I could paint worth a damn...

Well, here’s an extreme case: ballpoint!

Blender has come a long way from when it first crossed my Radar some years ago. Pretty impressive, even without the hair. I'm looking at tutorials now, as if I didn't have enough things to do! The Poison Ivy animation I had fave'd some time ago, just for the way the body moves.
Ballpoint pen? Damn.
I'm definitely not worthy!
