Description
Designed by James Lucas, utilizing the same modules as that of Jeannine Mosely's "Menger's Sponge". Folded from 1414 uncut rectangles of card, each 1.5" by 3.5" in dimensions, and assembled without glue. Calligraphy done by hand with a Speedball calligraphy pen and acrylic ink. Constructed from December 17, 2010, to May 6, 2011. Dimensions: 28.5" long by 15.75" tall by 8" deep. A gift for my chemistry teacher, Dr. Trish Plese.Related content

The chemist in me can't help but be super excited over this. Not only is it fun from an art perspective, it is completely up to date and IUPAC compliant.
(I had an experience with my advisor and a non-IUPAC periodic table... I am very observant of it ever since.)

Well, almost compliant. After I finished this (around 15 months ago) IUPAC approved the names of flerovium and livermorium for a couple superactinides. The even cooler part of it is that on the back of the table (not shown) there are details on each element's melting/boiling pts, reactivity, electronegativity, electron configuration, etc.
Fortunately I could easily replace the face card for each element with a new, updated, and calligraphied one

I don't know whether to be excited that I know there or more elements or to be disappointed at all my out of date periodic tables... I guess I will go for excited.
This origami table just gets more and more awesome doesn't it.

four months. * whistles * I'm incredibly impressed, sir! I also want one for myself, but I'm going to settle for just doing the calligraphy on a lowly flat piece of paper. :/ Guy you are impressively dedicated to your art form and for that I salute you. * salutes * And I do not salute in vain or sarcastically, you really impressed me. That cobra of yours is what really blew me away, and yet this is what I'm commenting.

Thanks, CaptainMcClellan, I'm honored you like my work! I also do commissions--if you would like me to make a periodic table poster (or anything else), I'd be happy to make you something, and we can work out price through etsy

XD Well, it's well deserved. Millions, perhaps billions can do ink sketches and paintings like me (or better), only a few thousand (in the world) reach your level of mastery in such a unique form of sculpture as origami. To think that no glue was used? In my paper sculptury, when I do it, it's always wires, tape, and paperclips. I couldn't do it with just paper. My sculpture is more like junk sculpture that's failed to reach the "that's awesome" but still gets "that's kinda cool" or "how unique." (Wish I had pictures :/) And as for the commissions, I can't afford that until I start getting some or my business gets off the ground. I'll keep that in mind for when I have monies like twenty years from now when I'll (hopefully) be observing a fifth, tenth, or fifteenth anniversary. If it comes down to an ice sculpture or a paper sculpture, I'd pick the one that'd last the summer. (And as per the anniversary thing, to be fair, I don't even know who I'm going to marry yet, I just want to have preplanned romantic ideas for when I do know. XD I really hope you're still doing origami by then, and I intend to pay a lot. )

Haha, thanks again for your comments. The table was simply made with interlocking blank business cards (like this, but assembled differently [link] ), so no tape or glue was necessary. Do you specialize in a particular genre of sculpture or with a particular medium? Hopefully in 20 years I can be REALLY good haha

You're quite welcome. And no I don't particularly specialize, but having just now messed around with it, ink-sketching seems to be something I'm particularly good at. I guess the written word is my specialty? I have a knack for coming up with really well developed stories, I just also have problems writing an actual book, but hey? I'm not dead yet! I still have time. As for that Menger Sponge, that's awesome! If I can figure out a way to do those in tetras (aka triagles, tetrahedrons) then I might be able to do that in similar fashion to my 3d art. Unfortunately I only ever uploaded a few examples of my 3d cos I only ever *did* a few, but this is best of what I did: [link] . Some people also seem to like my "fractal art" which is really just posed renderings of fractals with pallette manip. And yes, in 20 years you ought to be amazing! :3 You can look through the rest of my pictures if you like, whatever you like be sure to comment on! I love getting feedback and criticism too. ( I'm a bit of a jack of all trades, I work in what ever interests me at the time, with "good" but not "excellent" results. )

Ingenious! I like the idea. Actually, I was also planning to design a periodic table,
but this is just awesome, great job! ~♫♪

I can't really see clearly. Does each element have different height?

The height of the atomic symbol letters vary slightly but each square should be the same size.

Is it different from an ordinary periodic table?

manilafolder In reply to Eusoniptera [2012-07-26 01:38:13 +0000 UTC]
Nope. It's just a 3d origami depiction of one, with all the essential information written on it in calligraphy.
