biting flies.
Wolf Park has a cream they put on the wolves' ears once biting fly season starts, but Tristan is 14 years old and over the years, the flies have taken the tips of his ears.

I would believe so.
It's just that wild wolves don't live nearly as long as captive wolves, so the damage to the ears wouldn't be as noticeable.
