with diagonals I put the same question to myself... but don't have a clear asnwer 
I tell you why for me is important such a study... in advertising (2D... in my case) is very important to guide people in direction you want, and the general composition help the message or not, intriguing or not... and depends what you want to transmit. So in this case, every aspect of composition is crucial and work hand by hand with text and content - is like an orchestration with 3 elements...
