Description I love making these, just wish I was better at it!

** Apparently it is necessary for me to point out something about this. The object in between the main planet and the ocean horizon is the vapor trail of a ship flying upward toward the planet. It is not a shooting star. If it were, that would be the crappiest shooting star ever depicted in a piece of art. Meteors do not shoot up, nor do they bank or change direction at such an angle. So yes it is a ship, hence why it takes the ship 30 seconds to reach home.

** Any horizontal lines you see are a result of the jpeg file and gradient combined with the upload. The original file does not show lines. If anyone has an idea for completely getting rid of them, let me know!

** Update 1/10/08: I have uploaded a revised version of this. It came to my attention through a comment (and I'm not sure why I never thought about it) that given where the light source is according to the planet, a good chunk of the rings should be in shadow. I still like the way it looked previously, but this just makes more sense.

I did a version that included a small ship, but in the end I decided I wanted it to be too far away so that the light from the engine would be the only part you could see. Thanks for the comment!

Lovely piece of work, I must say, I really like it, but I have to point out something... I haven't read all of the comments, so sorry if I repeat someone else's words. What happened to the shadow on the rings of the planet?? There most definetly must be a shadow there, if the sun's light is coming from the left. Personally I would like it if there was a shadow there, it would make the picture more realistic. Other than that, I love it.

Wow, this piece is very interesting! Love the 30 Seconds to Mars reference. This is a great picture, as is, but I feel that some changes could really make this picture even better. The clouds I feel are very distracting, the blue sky would probably look even more intense without them. And the tiny little shooting star, its kind of distracting too. If you added more stars, it would balance the picture out, or you could just take the star out. Anyway, nice job! =]

Yeah, I don't listen to their music but it is where I got the idea. Also that's not a shooting star, it's the vapor trail of a ship, hence why it takes that ship 30 seconds to get home. Thanks for the input!

Don't know if its been suggested, I didn't read them all, but I'm not sure if I like the shooting star being there... not sure hmm

Quite like this, and leave the clouds, they make it look more believable. One thing the line that's showing across the bottom ring of the big planet ... maybe smooth it out a bit more ? It's a bit more obvious when viewing it on a small scale. But still a !

Oh damn, I thought that was just the way my monitor was displaying it! Haha. Ok well I uploaded a new file, it looks better but I still can't get rid of them completely... not without uploading a file type other than jpeg which it won't allow. Thank you for the comment and making me aware of it though, no one else said anything!

rieksie In reply to manticor [2007-06-04 14:24:10 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that looks much better! and the lines probably won't completely disappear if you use a gradient paint to make it.
