Description
Character design for my portfolio.Once Atticus was a great wizard, recognized throughout the world as the best at magical shields and defensive spells. But during the greatest battle of his life, he started to run out of magic while defending a capital city. Desperately, he sought the only solution he could find, to keep the enemy from entering the city walls: black magic. It was forbidden, he knew that, and he had never tested it before. Yet he saw no other choice...
The result was disastrous. Thousands of good soldiers and innocent people killed in the flaming inferno that replaced his magical shields around the city walls.
Atticus was devastated, and did not care when he was exiled from the kingdom. He left all the people he once was admired by, and settled down in an unpleasant, dangerous swamp. There he continued to study his magic for centuries, far away from the rest of world, and well aware of the fact that his glorious days were now only memories.
Medium: Photoshop CS5.
Date completed: March 13, 2012.
Edit: Fixed the brightness of the image, seeing as it was too dark.

Very beautifull piece...it was love at first sightΒ Β
I love his deep melancholic espression...that and the solar dust behind him make him look...older like something that has been forgotten..
thanks for sharing!

Thank you very much! It was very helpful to develop a solid story behind the character before drawing him, it made it easier to give more of a sense of story around him. I'm glad you like it!

Reminds me of the Wise Man in "Labyrinth" with the annoying talking hat. That said, it is absolutely amazing, and I really like the back story you gave him.

And you bet you deserves one, despite everything! Come!

That's about how I look after a long day of painting in front of the computer, or how I feel at least.
This is a really nice portrait, would you like my critique of it?

Well I think its very strong as is, but you could try using a larger variety of brush textures to help spice things up. Particularly with the strands of hair, the brush you used is currently very noticeable and a bit repetitive. Here is an example from Jamie Jones [link] which has a lot of brush variety. It just helps to energize an image when there is more diversity in the strokes.
Secondly, the wizards face gets a little lost in the background. If you could just lighten one or the other so they contrast more that may be an improvement. But, perhaps it gives a more mysterious mood as is.
Keep'em coming!

Thanks a lot for excellent feedback, I truly appreciate it
I definitely have to get better at using more variation in my brushes, and not shy away from the highly textured and exciting ones. I tend to stick to maybe 2-3 brushes throughout the whole painting process, and I agree that it tends to look a bit too repetitive that way.
And the wizard's face does seem to get a bit lost there yeah. I wanted to have it in shadow, so that it was kinda dark and depressing, but some more illumination to bring out the face would probably be for the better. Thank you for giving me your opinion, it helps a lot
