did you make this in maya and if so how did you make the lights only on the dark side? like, was is done in maya, or in the compositing phase?

This was made in Cinema 4d using a mix of built in shaders. I've never used Maya but this sounds like it may help you [link] if not I'm sure you could do it in post.
