Story
Day Two:
The day was grey and miserable as the sun rose. Lee was up early and ready to sort out Prissy for the dressage, feeling slightly groggy and tired from the dinner gala the night before. The mare was awake and bright eyed when he went into the guest stables, and he smiled as he saw her. She was stabled between Mouse and Fru to keep her comfortable. She didn’t like travelling or being alone, so having her two friends made her feel a little better. Fru whickered to Lee as he passed, and he scratched her nose before moving to Prissy. The mare snorted and weaved slightly, seemingly excited for the day ahead. Lee rubbed her ears and kissed her nose as she went to sniff his face. “Ready, girl?” He said softly as she lipped at his hair gently. He let himself into her stable and bolted the door behind him, beginning to unfasten her stable rug. Prissy hung her head of the door and watched the aisle. After a few minutes the mare started whickering at someone, and Lee poked his head over the door to see who it was. Zoe was approaching with Fru’s tack for the mare’s daily exercise. She had been informed there were some nice trails and despite the gloomy weather the mare still needed to go out. Lee grinned at her and she returned the gesture, resting Fru’s saddle and bridle on the rack outside the stable. “Heading out?” He called to her as he tied Prissy up inside her stable.
“Yeah, I can’t let her sit in her stable all day,” she answered as she pulled off Fru’s rug. Lee let himself out of the stable and picked a brush from the grooming kit. Zoe quickly groomed Fru and went to tack her up, the pair operating in silence as they prepared their horses. Lee had groomed Prissy the night before to show standard, and only had to brush off some dirt to make her look respectable again. He still had to braid her mane, however. Zoe was soon tacked up, and called goodbye to Lee as she headed out with her mare. The barn was starting to get busier with people getting ready for the dressage phase. Lee braided Prissy’s mane neatly, the mare dosing lazily as she was prepared. He knew she would soon liven up when they left the comfort of her stable.

Prissy was soon tacked up and ready for the warm up ring. Aithne had been around that morning with Amber, preparing Taffy for his dressage later on. Fool appeared to have a problem with his leg, and Aithne suspected lameness again. Lee promised to take a look later, but was starting to think maybe the stallion had laminitis. The man led Prissy out of the stable, and straight away her pretty head shot up into the air. She snorted and pranced forwards, Lee having to keep a tight hold on her reins to stop her bolting forwards. He was dressed in his show clothes, but had a coat over his jacket to stop the drizzle destroying his appearance before his performance. Aithne watched him warm up, calling casual instructions to him as the mare pranced around the ring. Prissy was excited, her body positively trembling as she trotted around. The other horses seemed to bother her slightly, and Lee started to think that he would need to start tying a red ribbon to her tail as she kicked out at a few stallions that got a bit too close for comfort. He was glad when their number was called and the mare could stop getting so worked up about the other horses. She pranced in with her head high, and Lee had to check and collect her as they made their way to the centre of the ring. They halted, and he tipped his hat to the judges before nudging the mare on. She danced as usual, with elegant and exaggerated strides that only an Arabian could pull off. He talked to her all the way through, hoping to God that she didn’t decide to be a spanner and freak out at a leaf like she often did.

Day Three:
Lee looked out at the weather nervously as the afternoon came around. The clouds were dark and rumbling, and the man knew it could be deadly. Prissy hated thunderstorms, and all it would take would be a flash of lightning to unseat him and destroy all their chances. He groomed her and tacked her up, and led her out into the pouring rain. She didn’t like it immediately, throwing her head up defiantly and rearing up onto her back legs. He hushed her and turned her in a circle to calm her. Zoe came out to help him, taking hold of one of the reins to help Lee move the mare forwards. It was dark and treacherous, the rain coming down in sheets and the thunder rumbling through the air and earth. Prissy was determined to not go anywhere, and it took all of Zoe and Lee’s effort to get her to the warm up ring. Zoe kept a tight hold of the mare as Lee climbed up onto her back. She reluctantly let go of the reins and predictably the mare tried to bolt off. Lee kept her under control and made her get onto the track around the edge of the ring. He was dreading his run on the course, and it would only come too soon.

Lee headed over to the course with only ten minutes to spare, keen to keep Prissy busy as long as possible. He trotted her around near the start of the course until he was called forwards. The mare was jittery and impatient as they waited for the bell, her head tossing up and down as she pranced on the spot. The bell sounded and the mare bolted forwards. The ground was soft and slippery in places, but that didn’t seem to hinder the small Arabian as she galloped towards her first obstacle. Luckily the thunderstorm had subsided just enough for him to get around the course, he hoped. The rain still came down enough to make visibility poor, but at least the thunder had stopped for the time being. All Lee could hope was that nothing dramatic happened while he tried to make it around the course.

Day Four:
The day of the jumping was surprisingly nice, with bright sunshine lightning everything up with colour that had been hidden for many days. Everything was still wet, but at least Lee could warm up without any rain bothering him. Prissy was more relaxed that day, and possibly a little tired from struggling around the cross country course. She didn’t flinch so much at other horses, but her ears were still pinned back for most of her warm up. Lee was aching from all the hard work over the last two days, but he still had to haul himself and Prissy over a set of jumps before he could call it quits. Zoe was there to instruct him for the jumping, calling advice to him from the fence. He respected her and Aithne’s opinion, but sometimes he did wish he could be left alone.

He entered the ring with high nerves, and cantered Prissy around slowly as he sized up the course from the back of a horse. He had walked it earlier with Zoe, sharing varied opinions on turns and difficulties. He had eventually taken her advice, and was prepared to take some of the more risky turns and trust Prissy’s nimbleness. Prissy was small and fast, and able to turn much sharper than some of the other large, long-striding warmbloods. The bell sounded and he turned the mare towards the first jump. She threw her head up and snorted, Lee checking her stride before releasing her. She launched over the jump with surprising ease, despite all her exhaustion. He didn’t expect her to go round clear, but one could hope.
