Description
After many years of work, one could not give up. Dancer was afraid of everything, even his own shadow. He is a gentle horse, no vices, not even bad behaviour. Pure love. But his fear constantly got the better of him. Actually, I wouldn't call it fear, but rather... too much blood that he can't handle. So I had to admit it, this contest was scary. It's our first one. We had to dive in, give everything to succeed. See if the work had paid off. So we arrived at the venue, I was a bit nervous, I can't lie. The course was impressive and the number of horses was making Dancer panic.
So I felt bad for him at that point.
He was out of the van with so much force that my dad had to hold him. I walked him around for many minutes, helping him to acclimatise to his new surroundings. He relaxed very quickly and I was able to put him in his box without any problems.
That evening I decided to ride him, a little relaxation session. He was pretty good, quite calm in spite of the few deviations when a horse passed by him. I reinforced each time that he didn't react to something that usually scared him. After this successful session I put him back in his stall and he had his evening ration with some carrots.
First day of competition. Dressage. When I went to see him in his box, he was dozing at the bottom of his box, something he never does! He quickly got up when he saw me. I walked him in the morning because our test was in the middle of the day. Then we started to prepare him quietly. At the relaxation, always calm which surprises me enormously but I continue on our way, I let him go at his own pace. The dance is going very well, no deviation! I am so proud of him. That puts us pretty well in the rankings on the first day!
Second day of competition. The obstacle. I had no apprehension for this event. Dancer loves jumping, he even loves it! Same routine as the last morning, we just added the heating blanket in the morning to prepare his back. We ended up with a bar, my fault for miscalculating my strides. We fall a little in the ranking but without big consequences!
Last day. The most complicated for us. The cross country. I admit, I was shaking. I had just made him walk near the cross-country course so that he could analyse it from a distance, but I didn't trust him. I knew him, he really panics for a fly. The start. Dancer starts well, a good gallop despite the fact that I hold him back a lot. The first obstacles come in front of us, it's going well for the moment. I try to stay calm, but I feel him getting tense when he sees the water from far away. So I slowed him down, so he could see what was in front of him. And surprisingly, he passed without any problem!
Very proud of my boy for showing what he's got, despite his fearful nature, he knows when he can and when he shouldn't. Thanks boy.
