Description
Here's the first set of sketches of menswear clothing inspired by the sport of fencing. The clothing line will only have 3 complete outfits and these are expanded ideas on the ones I chose in the previous assignment, along with some new ideas I wanted to incorporate (like the Hakama). The designs on the right were the first ones I came up with and the set on the left were the second sketches I did. I chose not to use any of the first ones because they had too much of a historical, non modern feel. So I abandoned that idea. The sketch with the arrow pointing at the figure is the one I decided to use in my collection. This class is for practicing comming up with and developing concepts and ideas, it's not one that I'll actually be making clothes in. However, some of these ideas I'd love to make if I had the time to do it...

Is there a particular name for the style all designs on the right have, with their pants that seem like they go into their socks? I can't find the name for the style anywhere.

Those pants are called Knickers. You can also search for a style called Jodhpurs, they have a similar silhouette.

I wish fencing whites were actually this awesome-looking.

my favorite are the symmetrical double breasted vests, particularly that 9th one, the sort of quilted look on the sides is neat.

Wow! (and hi again) My jaw dropped open when I saw this stage of your project in particular. Here's why... [link]
Considering I drew this back around 1997, I thought you'd find the similarities downright cool. At the risk of saying something that makes me look conceited like, "Great minds think alike," I'll instead say, "C'mon, that's just plain cool that the two unconnected clothing designs look THAT similar!"
BTW, thanks for showing off the various stages of this assignment. Sometimes seeing the brainstormed sketches is just as inspiring and useful as seeing the final result, IMO.

You're still quite the talented man that I knew in school. These are, as always, great designs and I can't wait to see your final product.
Cheers, Kristen

Yeah... I dunno. I see what you are saying about the historical non-modern feel, But I really like the ones on the right, especially the bottom row. But given my tastes I would probably be inclined to an equestrian or field boot-speaking of "historical and non-modern."

Aye, it's certainly something I would wear but there's not alot that can be done with having only 3 ensembles when finished. So I had to be sure they were all purely part of where I was going with this.
Thanks for the comment

well, I'm just tired of so many pants that have the same silhouette, the Hakama give a whole new option

It's funny, the one you chose was my favorite, too. Though i did really like the overcoat style ones in the other one.

Yeah! because it's the best hehe But yes, I think I may end up doing something about that asymetrical coat design... IDK, I shall see.

and it could easily be converted into a fencing style top with some extra padding to take any impact from light weaponry ^^
