Description Assignment for Drawing II: Semiotics and Narrative. Had to illustrate a folk or fairy tale and then put as twist on it. I made Rumpelstiltskin steampunk-ified... that is, lead into gold instead of straw into gold, scruffy Victorian garb, and the spinning wheel is a giant alchemy mackine with gears and boilers.
This is only about halfway done but will probably never get finished. I spent too much time doing research and not enough time actually making art with this.

I just love the way the paper of each figure gives you a sense of perspective. The design looks so dreamy like, not mentioning the two character there make me imagine a complete fairytale. I have no idea why, but I can't help to see the characters as little people and your work portraying everything in it's original size

Very, very nice work as always, Mare.

Man, it looks nearly finished the way it is now! What were you planning to add to it? I love that warm color scheme, especially the little figures. They make the place seem so big.

Thanks! The point was to make the machine huge. Um, I would have made more layers of machine... there would have been a lot less negative space and a lot more cogs, steam, and machine parts going back into the empty space of the room.
I'm not sure if it's readable in this format, but certain parts of this are actually layered - the flywheels, the copper pipes, many of the gauges, and the transparent containers are all separate layers of paper attached onto or under the backing. I would have done more of that.

You're welcome! And ah, I see. Some more details would be really neat, especially getting to search for little clever shapes in them! And what an interesting-sounding technique ... I never would have thought of that!
