The brush I used to smudge is called "Chalk 60 pixels." Just re-load your brushes, or load the defaults, and scroll down until you find one with a 60 pixel size to it.

Nice tut, though the technique is cuite farmilliar, my way is just messing around, smudging, duplicating, blending...
