"What if Mario 1 was built with pinball machine parts?"Weird question to have during a college lecture. Fortunately, all the lessons so far are extremely simple.
It was hard to tell how "Western" the machine would look. Early films were circus and cowboy centered. Nintendo would probably tap into that the same way Mario is a re-design for Popeye because of copyright. The Japanese units would nearly be impossible to imagine. Entertainment from Japan was a result of World War 2, and we're barely out of World War 1 at this point. Also consider that this would likely be a Depression-Era machine. It would be extremely cheap. Computer programming is basically non-existent. A few basic circuits would exist, but they would be barely more useful than a mechanical solution. A motor to run the scrolling would be the only required electrical component. And no, that's not a tv. It's a spinning display wheel with a light behind it to display your current level of strength. It would also be the thing to say "Game Over".
The solution of bricks and the ground not getting stuck on the enemies in the machine had the result of there only being the possibility of 1 brick/question block and one floor block. It does have the benefit of not being confined to a grid, the blocks can be placed at any height. You could also turn off the light illuminating the background and use a black-light to only show unique coloration the the blocks and characters, since it was invented in 1935. However, access to the light may be limited by money. It would be cool, though.
The castle and flag could simply be pulled from the side of the screen, along with the princess. I drew Pauline in the sketch, though.
With modern components, this would be extraordinarily easy to design. You could run the code of a Mario game in the background and have code running a display. However, it is possible to build with old components. If they invented pocket watches in 1510, they could definitely make mechanical Mario games in the 1900's.
Out of all the concepts that run through my head, I think Nintendo would actually like this. They did make an entire sub-series where Mario was paper, after all.

This is neat. I always like seeing your contraptions. Sounds like an interesting college lecture too, tbh

Come to think of it, there is a mechanical Pac man of sorts. Avgn covered it in Board James.
