what's the difference between clipping group and preserve opacity?

the preserve opacity locks completely what's in the layer,you can shade in the same layer (if you don't want to have a bunch of layers) but if you want to erase something it will leave a white track
with the clipping group you can paint all over the layer, but it will only shows the area covered by the layer below (clipped to), like in the "tutorial" I shaded the skin painting even over the white areas but it's not shown in the picture, justo shows on the skin base color
