Description If you get offended by this. Fine. I don't care. Unwatch me, unfavorite my work. Go right ahead. I won't mind. Just hear me out.

I'm not one to judge, so I'm not going to be pointing any fingers. Have any of you guys just stopped and looked at some of the submitted base work? I have. It's pathetic. Really. It is. Do you guys see how much time the left took me? That's sad. That's really, really sad. What about the right, huh?

I'm very upset with people. Can I use the word abuse here or not? I'm not sure. Still, I'm not going to lie. I may have not used this certain base before, but, before my "incredible" and "beautiful" pieces came out this year, I was just like you guys. My work was purely shit.

Shit.
Examples o' shit: [link] [link] [link] [link]

But that's just me, back in the beginning of 2011. You know what I guys did to get better and where I am today (emphasis on right doll)? I practiced. I found detailed tutorials. I experimented with colors, that may look bad now. But trust me, their going to be your friends soon enough. And another thing I do? I ask people. I have the nuts to go up to people and ask for their help.

Now, I know what you guys are going to do now. You're going to comment below on how stupid and how fucking wrong I'm being. Well, like it or not, I'm right in the end. And, I know. You're not going to become an amazing dolling artist in one night. It's going to take some time. Look at me now. It's been a year for me. More than a year, in fact. Look how I've imporved. But don't just take my word for it. Go explore the world, folks. Get involved in groups, make some friends here, ask people for advice every now and then.

I hope I didn't waste your time with my rant. ~m4

Hey man, I really appreciate that.
I still look at some of my old base edits and cringe.
But sometimes I'm just disgusted by some of the base edits people do.
Like when they use the spray paint tool on MS Paint. -_-
I'm getting better, but I still got aways to go.
At least I'm trying <3
(And I'm doing a pretty good job, so far. c: )

Hey, I'm still getting better, so you can't yell at me for that. v__v but sadly other people don't realize this and call me un-talented for using a base.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

maris4 In reply to EndlosofZero [2013-01-14 02:03:45 +0000 UTC]

No, no. You're getting there. This is towards base users who have been trying for a long time with no improvement who don't try to. You are trying and developing.

Oh, yeah Iknow. But two people on DA have come over to my art and called me un-talented. ._.

Then those deviants are untalented themselves and they just want to put others down who are getting there when they aren't. I ignore haters. You should too.

Urgh -_- I understand your point, and you're very right. But a lot of people are getting better, and then new ones just come in. There will always, unfortunately, be people who put down a shame to certain bases, not because they don't necessarily practice, but because they either lack talent or are just starting out. Not to say you aren't right. Because you are. Sucky bases are sucky. Just... Newbs man. Newbs

this is really true, my work isnt great, im honestly better on paper and a pencil, i try hard even though my stuff looks like crap, but i hate seeing really cheap jobs. i understand just starting out, and then you improve and its awesome to watch, but then there are people who just dont try T.T

gayrainbowsama [2012-11-14 17:54:37 +0000 UTC]

I agree with you mostly, but not everyone has the time and they just want to put their stuff out there even if it is crappy. I've been trying to draw for years and I have never really had the time to draw alot and practice. Once you get past your school life you really don't have time anymore. So yea some people's base work is gunna be bad, even some of the people who are still in school.

The point is, everyone's life is different. So what's the point on raging about other peoples work. Why not just give them positive critiques and try and help them improve. At least they are trying in their own ways.

it makes me angry seeing people when they say they tried really hard even though they don't even erase lines! they could at least do that and make new colors that looked good together! all i have is paint and it was really hard to work with when i first made a drawing using a base! but i did it. example of when i first started:[link] not that good.example of now:[link] much much better. i dont use the bendy line thing(what ever its called) to make hair and not really clothes. why cant people try? why cant people even use the right tool! or at least one that won't make it look bad.

alright i think i should stop typing now...

invertqueen7 [2012-10-31 01:13:35 +0000 UTC]

LOL, this is so true! My dolls/art was C-R-A-P when I started out. It's been about 5 months now, and my art HAS improved somewhat (but way better than it was before). But the one on the left...it's even better than how most crappy-like art looks (no offense to anyone).

But I understand why people draw poorly, for two...no, three reasons:

1 - They''re beginners with MS PAINT and have little to no idea how to use it

2 - They barely have any time to do art on the computer due to jobs/their lives

3 - They're lazy & don't care about how their art looks to others

I just basically looked at dolling tutorials on how to shade and everything, but most of my knowledge (mostly for the hair) is from the anime I watch/see on the internet or T.V.

So...yeah. If you try & get help, then you will get better in the end of it all. Just look on the internet & try things out...heck, even ask your ART TEACHER at school for help!

...Ok, probably not THAT far...but you get the point.

Yes, this is SO true. You absolutely need to practice if you're ever going to master dolling. But this needs time. I mean, look at one of the first dolls I made with a base two years ago:

And now look at a doll I made just recently:

Some of my old Dolls are deleted because I deactivated my Base Account.
But I think this: [link] [I did the black-haired Male] is one of my Best so far.
Might also be this one: [link]

I used to be really bad, but I sat down on my damn Butt and practised.

I always get worked up when I see good Bases turned to Shit.
Kudos for speaking your Mind.

Well, I guess I took some of my Knowledge from drawing on Paper. ^^
I'm still better on Paper, but I like using Bases for Character Designs or when I'm horribly bored. ^^

I'm gonna practice more, 'cause...I wanna be awesome like hollinesskiss or all the others one Day.

My tradional and digital styles are two very different things I like to stick with bases because the designs or my character are more..realistic and practical.

I'm going to practice until I can be like her and ~SelfishBlood and ~Aqua999 and others. Gosh, I love their styles~~

TheEel In reply to maris4 [2012-07-31 09:27:13 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes I sketch out Stuff myself or, if the base is big enough, convert it to my own Style and try to fix some stuff in the Course of it.
Or I preferably use faceless Bases. ^^

Same!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

maris4 In reply to TheEel [2012-07-31 17:33:34 +0000 UTC]

I usually just go for it when it comes to bases. I go head on, I really don't like going above and beyond with the neon colors and the rest of the frustrating process. I just like doing it a certain way. There are times, though, when I use the pencil tool and sketch the clothing out

When bases are huge and extreme, I try to resize them because I'm really not fond of them big. It doesn't work when they're huge. I'm really not advanced enough to use faceless bases. I mean, I try drawing the base sometimes but it neer works out the way I want it to.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheEel In reply to maris4 [2012-07-31 17:42:17 +0000 UTC]

I always do the Lines in Neon Colors first. I feel better when I can do it like that. ^^

That's why I re-sketch them. That way I can resize them without messing anything up. ^^

I with I had the patience to do that. Sadly, I don't.

That's a really good technique to do. I shoul try it one of these days

TheEel In reply to maris4 [2012-07-31 18:13:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh trust me, sometimes I get so annoyed with it that I don't touch it for Weeks.

I usually do it in Sai with an Arcus XL-Tablet. ^^
Also, I think it's better than blatantly copying the Base's Style.

(Whoopss..I meant wish ) Me too. But when I do edit the eyes on a long day, I like using *grangerpixel tutorials.

I only have MS Paint, I think it is a quality program^^
That too (:

TheEel In reply to maris4 [2012-08-01 12:17:12 +0000 UTC]

Arch, it's okay xDD

I have my own way of pixelling Eyes. It takes so much Time ;A;
If I could re-do Bases in Paint, I'd do it. <:

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

maris4 In reply to TheEel [2012-08-01 16:59:07 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the base really. If the eyes are big then I edit them, if they're small I try to do something to them at least

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheEel In reply to maris4 [2012-08-01 17:38:32 +0000 UTC]

I rarely use small Bases TBH xDDD I can't really do anything with them.

I've seen some of them. I can't wait for their outcomes. The small, small highly advanced pixel bases I can never do. I like he not so big but not not so small kind.

Mh, same. I always look for Bases that are easy to edit but...kinda hard to make 'em look awesome. Where you actually have to put effort.

maris4 In reply to TheEel [2012-08-01 18:20:03 +0000 UTC]

You should be. They look awesome! I try to find unique bases. Not so much the popular bases everyone uses. Effort is key to perfection~~

No, you aren't wrong. This exact type of thing gets on my nerves. But people do worse than the one on the left. It really pisses me off to see people call that base work :\
I'm just glad I kinda skipped my terrible-base-using stage. I did use a base or two terrible back when I was like 10 but I didn't submit it for obvious reasons. I started using them again when I was 12-13 and this, [link] , was the first thing I did. It's terrible, I spent a week on it, but it's better than a lot of other people and my few previous attempts. I could probably do something that that in a few hours at the most now, two or three max.
Although I may or may not have skipped that stage somewhat because I already draw/drew so it's wasn't that hard.

Thanks for commenting (:
And, yes, this topic also gets on my nerves. The one on the left shouldn't even be submitted but unexperienced base users don't know that. But, in the end, the only truth is practice makes perfect. And it doesn't take one night to become a master
