Wonderful choice in composition and 3/4 lighting! I really enjoy working on toned paper as well, this allows for those highlights of skin imperfections to really pop!
I think you did a stellar job-
congratulations!

I just looked at this again (it's in my Favorites) and I have to say it's a wonderful piece of work.

In many of these hyper-realistic drawings, all the details are right on, but somehow the total result just misses some essence of the person depicted. What you get then is a drawing that faithfully renders details but that doesn't quite come together as a whole piece.

Sometimes it's just because the artist chose a photo to work from that doesn't quite fully depict those characteristics that we associate with a particular face. The bearded George Clooney portrait that always seems to come up when I click on your Morgan Freeman is a good case in point... the angle is an odd one, so even though all the details are there, it doesn't seem to "shout" George Clooney because we're not used to seeing him from that POV.

A lot of times, though, it's more subtle than that. All the details are there, but the essence of the person is not. The artist hasn't been able to go the final step, and sit back and look at his piece and tell where it's NOT working. Sometimes a series of TINY adjustments, each one taking maybe only a few seconds, can make a huge difference... the difference between being 95% there, and nailing it.

That difference, and the ability to see your own drawing clearly and understand where you're a TINY bit off, and how to fix it, is the difference between a good drawing and a GREAT one.

And this, my friend, is a GREAT drawing.

Hey, thanks for your comments! I think you nailed it when you said that the focus of a portrait should be on getting the essence or character of a person, not the details. That's why I like doing portraits anyway, and I've seen many brilliant portraits that maybe took 30 minutes, and then others that may have taken months that just seem to be missing something. I still have lots and lots to learn so I'm not sure if I agree that this is a good drawing, but am glad you like it anyway Cheers!
P.S Your gallery is pretty friggin awesome!

Very small suggestion... When you're using white pastel with carbon pencil or charcoal, the white will often get tinted a pale blue, which I notice is happening a bit in your (very excellent) drawing. The best way I've found to get around this is finish the charcoal and then fix it with a very good spray-fix. I use a couple coats of Sennelier's Fixative for Pastels. Then you can come in with your white pastel (or a white General's charcoal pencil) and it won't pick up any pigment. Remember that you then have to fix the white pigment if you want to come back into it with black again, or you'll have the same issue with the blue.

Hey, normally scan (this one is scanned but it cost a bit because it's A2). However I have photographed stuff also. But I have access to an A3 scanner so I normally find it much easier to just scan if it is that size. Cheers
