what really impresses me with your rendering of Mr. Freeman is that you didn't hide his characteristic features and that is what makes this one of the best portraits of him i have seen

This is great. I love the depth of tone. I also want to experiment with charcoal/carbon pencils but have yet to get away from my trusty graphite. I like how you've rendered the beard. Does the canson paper have much tooth?
Regards
Mark

Hi there. Thanks. Canson paper has a different tooth depending on which side you use. The rougher side is more for pastels I believe, but I've only ever drawn on the smoother side. I'd say (in my limited experince with paper) it's probably got just the right amount of tooth for charcoal/carbon pencil and still be able to work in details and fill in the grain. Looked at your gallery and you should definitely give charcoal a go! I recently found a brand of charcoal sticks called Nitram Académie Fusains, they're not as cheap as others, but work really well on Canson paper once you have gotten used to it. They are less messy than normal charcoal, almost like graphite to use, but you get a much bigger value range. Much prefer them to graphite which I always used to use. Hope that helps! Cheers

Brilliant! Thanks so much for taking the time to reply with some great advice. I will see if I can source the Nitram Academie Fusains. I've only got a cheap tin of derwent charcoal pencils and I know how much variation there can be between brands of pencil (I now only really use Tombow Mono 100 for graphite work). I will also give the Canson a try. All my graphite work, of recent years, has been on Windsor & Newton Bristol Board, which is great for graphite but too smooth for charcoal.
I'll post any attempts here, when I eventually get around to it...I'm very sloooow!
Thanks again and regards,
Mark

No worries, glad to help. If you do end up trying that Nitram stuff, I'd say stick with it for a little while becuase it did take me some time to get used to after using graphite, but now really enjoy it. Thanks

Somehow I feel that adding this piece of art to my favourites is the least I can do!
I wish I could do more since the world needs to see this, and many more like this...in future I hope so!

White pastel and dark pencil - what color paper did you use? This is a great drawing.
