Description
Charcoal, carbon pencil and white pastel on Canson grey paper.Was a bit of an experiment in technique so any suggestions/critique is welcome. Cheers

This is mind-blowing. Could you let me in on as to how you got the degree of smoothness in the dark shading and the face toning? The dark shading is almost velvet-like. I never am able to achieve that with unidirectional hatching. Please help

ha thanks. um, the black is just layers of charcol stick used on it's side, rubbed into the paper with a tissue for the first few layers, and then i think i sprayed fixative on it (i was doing the black last) and then did another layer or 2 of charcol and finally a layer of carbon pencil on top. I think i did each layer just in a single direction, ie, vertically, then horizonally, then diagonally. To be honest there is a lot more texture in the black that what actually shows up on screen, which i probably prefer, but it's hard to get that to show up through scanning. Face was just done with lots of little marks with carbon pencil and white pastel, blended with a tortillion, and just repeating for several layers until it looked right. The grey paper also helped a lot with mid tones. These were just my methods though, i see lots of other drawings on DA where people get far superior results. hope it helps anyway, cheers.
