I don't think it is good to teach people the bad habit of starting with the eyes when drawing. it is best to start with a rough sketch of a head and fit the eyes into the head. start with big shapes and work into the smaller details. I don;'t know how you would be able to draw for a manga when basing everything off of the size of the eyes. also, you should do more body stucturing insead of outlines when teaching drawing. just drawing the outlines confuses beginers even more.

There are many artists that start out with just the eyes and have the eyes to the head and everything else proportional.

Many people have different ways of starting out. Just have to respect it.

Just but it's still a very small percentage of people who work like that, is Mark is trying to 'teach' people something he should show how it should be done to beginners.

Pretty sure he's not saying anywhere that's the way to draw an anime girl if you're a beginner.
I've been watching his videos for more than a year now but never really took advice from them since I like to learn on my own but in most of his tutorial videos he always mentions it's just "his" way of doing it.

True, but I wouldn't suggest it for a beginner. If it were a beginner I say they should do it like Winged Lioness suggests.

Yeah not for beginners obviously. But mediocre artists could give it a shot.

Skarlog In reply to BF2X [2010-08-04 04:37:46 +0000 UTC]

They could, but I still wouldn't suggest it. At least, it never worked out for me, always just a little bit off...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BF2X In reply to Skarlog [2010-08-04 04:48:55 +0000 UTC]

I do it lol
I flip it to make sure it's proportional and make adjustments to make it look aligned.

BF2X In reply to Skarlog [2010-08-04 05:01:59 +0000 UTC]

Too much work for me to use basic shapes to get the pose.
Sketch the pose; sketch the face, hair, clothes, etc...
Then lineart it, color it blah blah blah

It's just eehhhh

Skarlog In reply to BF2X [2010-08-04 05:13:35 +0000 UTC]

I suppose it all comes down to how you practiced when you were learning to draw. The basic shapes come easy to me now because I would use them all the time when I was starting out. Call me crazy, but I kinda like the "tediousness" of it. Lets me relax.

Interesting. Guess I'll either try something new or stick to what I'm doing now.

I know lots of people who start with the eyes, and it turns out fine... most of the time. but when it gets more complicated, starting with the eyes just makes it harder to make things fit together and be consistent. it is just a really bad habit for people(aspiring artists) to get into, especially when you start trying to draw things more realisticly. it is like a death trap. I know I sound harsh, but it is really tough to break a habit once you start and I would rather people not have to learn the hard way.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BF2X In reply to WingedLioness [2010-08-04 04:09:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh I know. I have the same habit but I'll mostly sketch out guidelines "sometimes".
Beginners will learn sooner or later. I've seen a lot of weird ways beginners start out sketches. I saw one person once start out from the bottom up. Feet to hips to head. Just have to let them do what they want.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WingedLioness In reply to BF2X [2010-08-04 04:22:13 +0000 UTC]

I heard of that! oh my god, I once heard that someones art teacher had told them to start with the feet and I was like what the hell? so I just had to try it! lol it did not work very well. it should make sence, to start with the base, but it just doesnt work.
but as a general rule I don't start with any one feature, but work from big shapes to smaller details.

BF2X In reply to WingedLioness [2010-08-04 04:24:35 +0000 UTC]

Ahahah jeez.

Well I've tried that. Starting out with basic shapes. It just doesn't work for me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WingedLioness In reply to BF2X [2010-08-04 19:07:35 +0000 UTC]

well, I looked at your gallery and your drawings are great, so what ever you do, it must be working! I don't really have any problems with how people draw, whatever floats their boat really, but I do try to promote starting with general shapes because it is key for observational drawing and too few people know how to do that these days. I actually met a girl that wanted to be a mangaka and she was convinced that you didn't need to know how to draw things from observation to be a manga artist. boy does she have a shock coming for her.

BF2X In reply to WingedLioness [2010-08-04 19:26:19 +0000 UTC]

Lol thank you.

I wish I could be a little more patient when drawing like some artists. I always want to get something done too fast and then it comes out the way I don't want it to. I'll probably try something else someday.

Haha every now and then you need a reference to get a pose down. Eventually you get the idea and can draw anatomy near perfectly plus backgrounds and such but it requires a lot of referencing and learning from other artists/art college. Yeah she is in for one hell of a shock.

How peculiar! You're the only artist I know who starts with the eyes! Pretty neat! ^^

I mean, I always draw out the nude form before I put on the clothing, hair, eyes, etc.

So cool. ^^ I wish i had the money to buy your novels, but alas, I do not. ;_;

Anyhow, keep up the good work!

RobynRose In reply to ??? [2010-08-03 21:28:36 +0000 UTC]

I do not find this to be a very helpful tutorial. It doesn't explain very much at all, and really only teaches people how to copy one character in one single pose. It also teaches bad form to beginning artists because you do not use guides or perspective lines. Expert artists may not need to use these, but if you are making a tutorial, you should show the proper steps to making a drawing.
